What Is In Baby Food?
Walking through the supermarket, you have probably come across entire isles dedicated to baby products, including baby food. Small jars filled with chunks or pureed fruit, vegetables, and entire meals are sold by companies such as Gerber, Beech Nut, and others. Although it may seem like a good idea to eat baby food to control portions and calorie intake, as the baby food diet suggests, one has to question: is baby food healthy? Many think that baby food is free of sugars, additives, and preservatives, but this is not always the case (unless the product is marketed as organic). Many of the products contain almost as much sugar and sodium as an adult meal! For example, Gerber’s Fruit Medley Dessert has almost 75% of its calories coming from sugar, making it an unhealthy option for adults, let alone for children.
Healthy Baby Food
Baby food doesn’t have to be store bought. It can easily be made at home with a blender. You can cook down fruit and vegetables and puree them to obtain the same product you would have bought in stores. If you do opt to buy baby food in stores, make sure to read the nutrition label before buying! There should be no added sugar in the ingredients list: syrup, cane, dextrose, and fructose indicate added sugar. Also note the sodium content, and you are on your way to making a healthier purchase.
