Is Baking Soda Healthy?
You may have seen baking soda listed as an ingredient in recipes for baked goods, but what is in baking soda that helps in baking? Baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate, an antacid that neutralizes acids. When baking, it breaks down protein and tenderizes the product. With the addition of an acid and water, carbon dioxide is produced, which causes the baked product to rise. Since it is a chemical you may be wondering: is baking soda good for you or is baking soda bad for you? There are some health benefits of baking soda as an acid neutralizer, including use as an antacid during heart burn and as relief from burning on the skin. Before drinking however, be sure to consult a doctor.
Uses of Baking Soda
As an acid neutralizer, there are numerous uses for baking soda. Drinking a mixture of baking soda and water helps heartburn and indigestion. It also helps athletes perform better in their sport by neutralizing lactic acid buildup, thus delaying muscle fatigue. If sunburned, bitten by insects, or in the case of a rash baking soda made into a paste can be used as a relaxant by spreading over the skin. A solution with water can be used to clean dentures. Use as a toothpaste is not recommended by the American Dental Association.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
