Is Bratwurst Healthy?
You may have seen bratwurst, a German sausage, being sold at your deli and wondered, “what is in bratwurst?” Made from pork, beef or veil, bratwurst is an uncured, fresh sausage, which means that it does not contain the nitrates found in cured products. It may still, however, contain high amounts of sodium. It does contain high amounts of spices, including cardamom, celery seeds, caraway, and coriander, among others. Usually grilled or simmered in beer for flavor, bratwurst is not considered a health food due to its high fat, sodium, and cholesterol content, but it does have some nutritional benefits, the biggest being its choline content. Choline aids in the construction of cell membranes and is a precursor to two important chemicals: acetylcholine, which is used in the brain, and s-adenosylmethionine, which helps with pain and depression. Those suffering from high blood pressure should avoid high sodium intake, and everyone should enjoy this food in moderation!
What to Eat With Bratwurst?
Bratwurst is usually eaten accompanied with various condiments, the most popular being grainy mustard. It is also often served on a hard roll with sauerkraut. Of course, it can just be sliced up and enjoyed by itself!
