Is Brown Sugar Healthy?
Whether in your tea or baked goods, the health benefits of brown sugar vary only slightly from that of white sugar. What is in brown sugar? Simply put, it is white table sugar with molasses added to it, giving it a different color and texture. Is brown sugar better for you? Nutrition wise, it contains about the same amount of calories as white sugar, but since it does have the molasses it contains additional minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium. These minerals are there in miniscule amounts, however, so the brown sugar health benefits, the few that there are, are similar to those of white sugar.
Healthy Alternative to Brown Sugar
Your main concern when baking or sweetening something may be: “is brown sugar fattening?” By itself, and especially in baked goods, it does contribute a lot to the calorie amount. Most of the calories come from carbohydrates, and if your calorie intake is higher than your expenditure it may lead to a bigger waistline. So what can you use instead? There are natural options, such as honey, agave nectar, molasses, or rice syrups, available on the market, but those are high in sugar as well and may not always work as a substitute in baking. The key is to use in moderation, and to use less. You may also want to look into artificial sweeteners, but they have been shown to contribute to certain health problems and may not be the best option.
