Are Burgers Healthy?
Originally, the term “burgers” referred to a patty made out of ground beef placed between two hamburger buns and filled with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, cheese, and various condiments. Today, the term has expanded to include patties made out of different ingredients, including chicken, turkey, fish, and even vegetarian ingredients! Since the term “burger” covers such a vast array of foods, whether it is healthy or not depends on the ingredients used. For example, a turkey burger with tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles is much healthier than one filled with a double meat patty with melted cheese on top. If you make your burger at home, you can control your ingredients, but even if you buy one in a restaurant or fast food place you can pick and choose what goes in it to make a healthier burger!
What to Eat With Burgers?
A low calorie burger is very easy to create by taking out certain ingredients or substituting them for others. Usually, a hamburger bun will be used and filled with some form of patty, lettuce, bacon, tomatoes, onions, pickles, cheese, and condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, etc. Choose a whole-wheat bun to get extra fiber into the meal, or you can even use pita bread and put everything inside that! In addition, you can opt not to get mayonnaise and cheese to help cut back on some calories and saturated fats. Your burger will be just as delicious without them!
