How many calories did I burn?

Quote  |  Reply

I have my own treadmill at home. I have used it regularly over the years, but it’s only now after I joined CC that I have started writing down the details of the workout. The problem comes with putting them on the site.

I spent 2 hours on the treadmill alternately walking and jogging. My display showed I had moved 10.6 km and burned 534 calories. But when I went to put this on my CC page, it said (as I looked for something as close as possible from the workout list) 1118 calories burned.

I do realise that I can just put in what my treadmill displayed, but with a difference that high I was concerned that it might be showing the wrong numbers.

Does anyone have any ideas about what sounds reasonable for this workout?

My treadmill is a Vivotion 2000.

5 min. walking on lvl 5

2 min. jogging on lvl 7

for 120 min total.

Any feedback is appreciated. =)

I just posted a similar question.. I think the machines that do not let you enter your weight just use a base weight of 150lb or so.  And when you enter your weight on CC or any other web site it shows more calories burned.

My bike says- I burn 150 calories for 30 min @ 12mph(average)  but when I enter informatin with my weight on the website(s)  its around 450.. so I am taking the higher #..haha  no I weigh 250lb so I know I am going to burn more calories than someone 100lb less than me.

Wow...2 hours is a looong time to spend on the treadmill. Good job on having the patience for that.

Were you able to enter your weight into your machine? If not, I would go with CC's numbers (40% walking, 60% jogging for two hours). If you did enter your weight, I would maybe go with an average of the two?

On my treadmill at home if I go over 999 calories it rolls over and starts at 1 again...are you sure it wasn't 1534 calories burned? Most treadmills I've used have usually over estimated actual calories burned.

The calorie counters on machines, especially home versions, are notorious for being way off and your machine is amazingly low for a 10K walk. I wouldn't worry about what it says. You might want to try a treadmill at a health club with this routine to see what it says, I imagine you will be around the 1200 mark for calories burned.

I suspect the CC 534 calories burned most accurate for your recent 120 min walk/jog.

A good rule of thumb is about 100 cal burned for each mile run by a 150 lb person.

10K is about 6 miles.

Since you walked more than half the time, even 100 cal/mile is probably a generous estimate.

Interval training burns more cals than steady state cardio. A good rule of thumb is to never generalize cals burned. It really depends on the fitness/cardio health of the individual. Two 150 lb people can burn signifigantly different amounts of cals - even if going same speed, intensity, etc. I understand that if you don't have a HRM...you will have to do some guessing and generalizing but be aware..those numbers could be slightly off or signifigantly off.
