calories burnt spinning???

Quote  |  Reply
ive started spinning classes and go 45mins twice a week and 1 hour advanced twice a week. The question is how many calories am i burning? the CC activity log doesnt seem to include spinning, when i added cycling instead it varies massivly on the speed. I know im working hard and try and push myself as much as possible but what am i burning in an hour?

Im average fittness, 140lbs and 5'7" Female.

Im trying to drop 15lbs but even after ballet/spinning everyday and eating about 1800 cals ive only lost 2-3lbs in a month :-(

Sorry, I'm no help. but I was hoping you could tell me what spinning is. I've never even heard of it before.Embarassed

Thanks

Spinning is a class on stationary bikes.  A class leader designs a workout that includes faster and slower bits, and simulated hills (you adjust your resistance for these).  It's really a lot of fun.

As for the calorie question, I push myself much harder in spinning classes than I do when I workout on my own, so I think you can use the "vigorous" calculator to work out your calorie expendature.
oh my god i work so much harder than when im on a normal excerise bike. Think the fact that you cant give up after 15mins, when it starts really hurting, you have to keep going and you have to turn the gears up and down and chamnge speeds its a killer.

Also i kind of laugh at the people who clearly have the gears set very low and just cycle away happily, are they actually getting fitter? but why are they thin when i put so much more effort in?

I am 5'2", weigh 115-ish and spun regularly (3-4x/week) until 2 months or so ago. Anyway, the heart rate monitor says I burn somewhere between 360 and 380 cals in a 45-min session. This has been pretty consistent regardless of how tired I am, how I feel, etc. 380 was after not spinning for a month, and when I was spinning all the time it was closer to 360. HTH

I'm 145lbs and 5'9" and I wear my heart rate monitor when I spin (2-3 times/week). I'm pretty much always between 400 and 500 calories on the burn, and usually right around 450 for a 45 min class (inc. cooldown). Average fitness too... hope that helps!

thanks - so ill assume it to be 380 for 45 mins and 45 for an hour and i should be about right. thanks
chelsea, I was laughing when I read your comment.  I have the same people in my classes that are like flying when they are supposed to have their resistance jacked up!  LOL.  One guy last week, did the whole hour with his hands crossed over his chest, just pedaling.  During one of the last hills when we were supposed to have the resistance up like crazy, sweat dripping down my face, my quads burning, I was ready to kill him!
By the way, to the original quesiton, I think 450 for an hour is a good estimate.  Some say its more like 600, but I think it depends on how hard you work.  Plus, I'm not sure how this effects the readings that people get from their HRMs, but doing hills on high resistance I think is more of an enaerobic workout, so your HR will be lower.  Not sure if that makes sense, but I think it would effect the # that the HRM gives you.  Spinning is a combo of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.  Its a killer though if you make it!
thanks Kate for understanding my annoyance at the lazy people in classs. It really doesnt effect me how hard they work, but you kind of feel cheated that they sit their skinny with no sweat ruining their make up whilst your dying. I have 3 different instructors, i love the really scarry one who pushes me harder and tells everyone off for not trying hard enough, i come out the class feeling like ive achieved something.

So 1 hour spinning equals salad and a large slice of choclate cake tonight, i know its not the usual doet but ive got to have cake, my mum gave it to me and its huge and choclately and yummy and homemade and i want it now.
Enjoy the cake!  I don't like cake, so I'm not jealous LOL.

Yes, I like the girl that yells at everyone.  This guy could stand to work a bit harder and lose a few extra pounds.  But you're totally right about it having an affect on me.  I see them not working, and my motivation kind of starts to go down a bit - I just try to not look at them, but he had a white shirt and was sitting right under one of the lights I couldn't not see him!
we do it in the dark!!! im not sure why but guess its better than having the spot lights heating us up.
Yes!  Other people annoyed by cheaters in spin class!  There are a couple of girls in the Sunday class I used to attend that would sneer at me in my cycling jersey and shorts.  Yeah, okay, I'm not the thinnest person, but I'm serious about cycling and spinning, and I HATE wearing clingy, soaking wet cotton clothes.  They never touch their resistance settings, so when we sprint, their hips are bouncing all over the place, and the flywheel is going like crazy.  It cracks me up, though, that they are completely exhausted at the end of class, and I've only used it to warm up for an outside ride on my road bike.  They also have no idea about cadencing, so when I'm turning like 60 rpm on what's supposed to be a topped-out ascent (resistance knob all the way on for me), they think they are the ginchiest for turning 100 rpm with no resistance.  Grrr!

Sorry about the rant.  Anyway, I usually put in 600 cals for my 65-minute class.

It really depends on the format of the class.  If its a freestyle spin class you cant really get a good estimate for every time.  The instructor is probably doing something different each time.

Im a Group Ride instructor from Body Training Systems.  Our class is structured and is for everyone.  The first track is the ride track where mostly you just have 5 increases to build your base resistance up and a ramp at the end.  The next track is the terrain track where you have a seated climb and climb a couple hills.  Then you have a roll track where you are going over 3 hills and 5 increases before you stand on the first hill.  Then we have the intervals track where it is a 40 second race with 2 increases followed by a 30 second climb.  After that we have the Chase track where you are in and out of the saddle, and climbing.  Next up is the spin track where we spin at a lighter resistance to get a good recovery before we go into the climb track.  In the last track the climb track we increase 5 times before we stand on the first mountain and then one while were climbing, then we increase 2 times on the next hill.  Then 8 times on the last mountain that has a 3 minute climb.  Next track is the celebrate track where we cool down, then we stretch off the bike.

Group Ride burns 400-600 depending on your intensisty.  I would try one out if you have the chance.  Group ride is ussually a lot better than freestyle because its structured and the music is better.

Have a great day!

thats pretty much the structure of my ride. We have 3 different instructors at my gym, but i love the big scary guy who knows when your not pushing yourself and makes you feel so guilty you try 10x harder. The other 2 guys just dont cut it, after an 60min class yes im worked out but im not dead - i like to be dead -  i feel like ive earnt my dinner.

And to anyone out there who hasnt tried spinning, get on your bike - youve/hate it.

I have been contemplating a spinning class, they have it here at the local gym. I just started a Group Power hour work out routine. I want to drop about 30 LBS.  I workout harder with others too.  i really like being "Dead" after words too.

Chelsea you look great girl, Ezra should be proud of that.  Hopefully you have met your goals.
