calories burnt at work?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi!

I'm a college student working retail (not for much longer-hate it). I just decided to check how many calories I burn while being on my legs for 7.5 hours. CC said I burn 1800. Of course, adding to that are the basic things you do on the floor of the store like picking stuff up, putting things on shelves. But anyway, can 1800 really be true? It seems like a lot. :S

Yeah I was wondering the same thing actually! Where do you work at? I work at Abercrombie & Fitch...and even though its not too physically demanding of a job...mostly just standing/folding/etc I always find myself absolutely exhausted and sore after a six hour shift...haha i guess it could be the pounding music too!

I'm not sure on your question and how much you burn doing your work, but I should add for your benefit if you don't know: if you want to work out your BMR and are under 21, CC's tools are inaccurate and you should use this calculator to work out your BMR: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html as you are still growing. Yes, even in the later years - there's more going on inside of you that you simply can't see. A female under 21 needs 1500 calories per day bare minimum, sedentary, and a guy under 21 1800 per day minimum, sedentary.

On your initial question, though, sorry I can't be of more help! D; 1800 does seem... a little much, but I'd certainly think you'd burn more than usual.

This banana person posts the same thing on every thread I've seen. Is it a bot?

finskafisk, I work somewhere way less cool, but OMG I can't imagine working with such loud music. I hate going in stores like that because of their music. And the scent makes me sneeze LOL

I know my legs hurt by the end of the shift, and I can never do anything else after work. I just collapse on my bed.

Haha i wouldn'te exactly call it "cool"...I'm so sick of retail too though...I just use it to pass the time I have at home over break otherwise I'd probably be bored and doing nothing...today was the worst...day after christmas sale...CRAZY...but i'd factor it in as perhaps standin half the time and walking half the time...as the burn...so if you burn 4 cals/min walking and like 2/min standing and work a four hour shift it would be like 2 hours walking and 2 hours standing...depending how active you are.

Its definitely exhausting though I agree!

i worked in retail for a couple years and i didn't really exercise cause i felt like i was so tired after work. and i lost weight really fast. so i would guess that 1800 isn't that far off.

is there a website that can give you  a general idea of the calories burnt at work? or is wearing a hrm the only way to know? i work in retail also, but it is very physically demanding, i break down around 5 or 6 pallets 1.8m high full of crates weighing up to 12kg each, and then i fill that stock throughout the rest of my shift...any thoughts?
