Is Chili Good For You?
Chili is a dish that can greatly vary in ingredients, so what is in chili determines the specific health benefits of chili, is chili fattening, and is chili healthy. Since there is such a vast variety of recipes, there is no straight answer. The healthiest recipe is one that contains only the basic ingredients: ground beef, tomatoes, and a variety of spices. Ground beef will provide a great amount of protein, vitamin B12 and B6, and phosphorus and iron, and the tomatoes are a good source of lycopene and vitamins A and C. In moderation, chili can be a part of a healthy, nutritious diet that provides all the chili health benefits.
What Is Chili Made Of?
Chili is a popular food at cook-offs and potlucks and a dish of much controversy around the United States. There are a variety of recipes, including low calorie chili recipes, depending on region, people, and even family secrets that have developed since the 1800’s. At that time, it was a cheap and filling meal and many people survived on it, including during the Great Depression. Although even the basic ingredients differ, usually beef chili includes ground beef, tomatoes, chili powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. The rest of the ingredients are up to the cook, and there are even some recipes that include whiskey and chocolate!
