Calories in Chinese food. How do you calculate them?
Does anyone have a good website to recommend that provides the calorie count for a number of chinese dishes? I found a couple but either they don't have too many dishes listed or they don't specify the portion which can vary greatly by restaurant.
Other wise listing all the ingrediants is a hassle.
Thanks in advance for your tips.

Guessing portions in a restaurant is tricky, especially one where you can reload your plate and lose count of what you're doing. You almost have to think volumetrically. 1/3 cup of white rice is about 80 calories (if you can sense that - I'd say that's about a heaping serving spoons worth), and I'd double that for fried rice. I'd call soup 80 cals per half cup - about what they serve for an appetizer. Fried wontons with filling maybe 50 cals each, fried egg rolls maybe 200 cals, spring rolls maybe 100 calories. Chow mein 150 cals per 1/2 cup, and I'd say about the same for any stir fry mix from happy family to kung pao.
A good rule to remember is that a cup of chili con carne is 300 calories. I'd treat chinese food as about equivalent. If you eat 4 cups of it (a quart takeout container's worth), you've eaten around 1200 calories.
That's how I'd treat it anyway. If anyone has any better advice I'm as eager as hasta to know.

Wow....this is a sodium-loaded bomb. This will definitely swell on you - water retention for days afterward. The serving sizes aren't given on the link, but fried rice is mentioned as 4-5 cups for 1500 calories. That's a lot of fried rice. They must be talking about a whole order.
I guess we'd better keep our portions very small. Maybe we can look into Thai food. They're a little lighter on the sauces. Thanks for the input!
