Calories in cough syrup

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone, just a silly question...

I'm trying to lose these last dreaded 10 pounds...and have just come down with a horrible cough.

Do cough syrups have any calories, would you count them? I just want to make sure me being sick does not sabbotage my weight loss.

Thanks

The reason people are having that reaction is that losing weight should take a backseat to getting healthy when you're sick.  Your body needs extra energy to recover so eating your "normal" calories and counting every little bite when sick might mean that you take longer to get healthy.  And surely the idea is to get healthy as fast as possible.

Remember that, as long as you don't eat more than you burn, you won't gain weight.  So, if you burn 2000 cals/day and normally eat 1500 to lose 1 pound/week, you would have to consume a *lot* of cough syrup to send your calories over 2000.  Unless you're planning on drinking cups of the stuff (or taking cough syrup every day for a year), it's not worth worrying about - especially since your body needs extra calories when sick anyway.

So, it's different than counting a couple of teaspoons of sugar that you consume every single day.

i don't think anybody was saying that if for example they eat 1400 calories a day and they're at 1400 for the day they just wouldn't have the cough syrup that they need

it's just a matter of keeping record and counting everything

you could also say that you would need A LOT of sugar in your coffee to make a difference to detriment your calorie count for the day

but you would still count it
