Is 1/3 of calories each for fat, protein and carb okay?
Asked by rongoldman on Sep 11, 2009 in Nutrition

My ratios for fat, protein, carbs is about 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.  Is this OK?  Most of the fat is from olive oil.

Answer

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends this energy distribution:

  • 45 – 65% of calories from carbohydrate (average 55%)
  • 10 – 35% of calories from protein (average 15%)
  • 20 - 35% of calories from fat (average 30%)

For weight loss, I prefer:

  • 50% of calories from carbohydrate
  • 20% of calories from protein
  • 30% of calories from fat, mostly unsaturated fat.

Your diet provides:

  • 33% of calories from carbohydrate
  • 33% of calories from protein
  • 33% of calories from fat, mostly unsaturated fat

At 33% of calories from carbohydrates, you are short on energy and fiber. And with a higher carbohydrate intake, 20% of calories from protein would be enough to offset losses.  But, the body is happy to burn energy nutrients at various ratios - as long as you get enough vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
