*On a side note I did weigh 160 (or more precisely 158.4) a few days ago, but I had a really nasty binge attack 2 days ago, and i havent gotten on the scale (I'm gonna wait until a few weeks from now). So im just guessing at around 165.
Congratulations on your decision to lose weight. You have come to the right place as CC will teach you so much about getting HEALTHY! And I see you are new here so w~e~l~c~o~m~e!

You are aiming to eat way too few calories for your height and weight! The minimal number of calories ANY female should eat is 1200 calories - merely to keep the body functioning properly. Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to survive. Here is a very rough scientific break down provided by a dietician for a  5' 2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

If you continue to eat 1000 calories you will end up doing long-term damage to your body and will not lose the weight you want to in a sustainable manner.

And to answer your question specifically, I just stopped calorie counting myself 1 week ago but prior to that I was eating 1450 calories a day, I am 5'1" and 107lbs. In fact, since I stopped calorie counting and upped my intake to probably about 1700 I am still losing! Amazing, if you eat more you LOSE MORE (within reason of course as you still need to intake less than you expend)

I'm 22, female, 5'6", and 158 pounds.  I maintain on a little over 2000 a day, as far as I can tell, so obviously I'm aiming for less than that in order to lose weight.  The site picked 1600 as my goal, but that seemed a little low to me (I'm all about making small changes over time; I know if I make a drastic change, I won't stick to it, and I'll gain all the weight back).  My personal goal is around 1800, but I've been averaging about 1900 lately.  (I also burn 200-300 daily in the gym.)  I just figure as long as I consistently eat less than what it takes me to maintain my weight, I'll eventually be fine.

Listen to nycgirl.  1000 calories is too few for you to function well.  1200 is the minimum recommended for any woman.  I plugged your info into a calculator (http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators /basal/basal.html), and it said your BMR (basal metabolic rate--the number of calories your body needs to function if you just sleep all day) is 1709.  So you should not eat any less than that, or you risk your health.  (The 1200 number is for really tiny women; you or I would be starving ourselves at that point.)  One good way to figure out how much you should eat is just to log everything you currently eat (without trying to diet) for a while (a week or so), and figure out how many calories that is.  If you're currently not gaining or losing weight, then that number is the number of calories it takes you to maintain your weight.  To lose weight, you want to create a deficit of 500-1000 calories a day (no more), either by cutting what you eat or by adding exercise (or both).  If you do this, you should lose 1-2 pounds a week (the doctor-recommended healthy amount).  If you haven't played around with all the tools on this site, I highly recommend it.  There are also a lot of really good articles, and the other threads are full of good info too.

    Good luck!

    nycgirl,

Thank-you for your informative post.  It was good to see in numbers what a woman's body needs to keep organs healthy and everything running properly!

What is very hard to understand about teenagers is that the desire of being thin is so strong that many of them dont care much about their health, I know because, when I was a teenager, I was anorexic @ a weight of 90 lbs and honestly I knew all the rules about being healthy, my mom even had me talking to a psycologist, nutricionist and a lot of doctors, but I just didnt care, I wanted to be thin so bad, I would see a fat girl in the mirror(and I still do), then I got pregnant, however I did care about my baby being healthy so I started to eat right cause my family and the doctors would force me, eventually I went up to 160lbs at my 9th month of pregnancy (that is the most I have ever weight) but now my daughter is 4 yrs old my weight varies between 115 and 120 and I still cant loose that baby weight...lol

society has a big role with unhealthy teens, I just think they need to expect less from girls and make models eat...:)

i used to eat 600 calories or fewer a day, but it was just too difficult for me to function properly, and i'd binge at least twice a week. it was terrible. plus, once i was on vacation, i gained a lot of the weight that i had previously lost. now, i'm eating at least 1200, and i feel great! i'm losing weight at a healthy pace, and i never binge anymore. i hardly ever feel hungry either.

    weight : 126.7

    age : 22

    frame : med/small

Calorie goal :  between 1200 and 1400 per day

goal weight : 117 to start, probably between 110 and 115 overall.

I've tried eating more, I've tried eating less, and this seems to be finally the right amount of cals for me.  When I ate less than that I felt tired and  hungry all the time.  When I ate a little more, I was stuck at the same weight for almost 2 months.  This may seem low to lots of people but according to CC at my current level of activity, 1500 is my maintenance number.  Its either more excersize or less cals, and with a new job there is just no more time for working out :(  Just make sure not to eat less than 1200, its bad for ya, just like nycgirl said above.
