Quote  |  Reply

Can someone explain to me why there is such a difference in calories in eggs?I feel like I am not getting an accurate count of calories.A poached egg is only 71 calories, the same size egg if I scramble is 102 calories,I do not add anything extra to the pan and I do not add oil.If I hardboil an egg it is 78 calories. Can someone explain the difference to me?Am I missing something?

1 large egg has 70 calories. The only way you're going to change that calorie content is if you add anything to it. I assume you're getting these numbers from CC? I would guess the scrambled egg count is so high because it accounts for milk?

I've always counted my eggs as either poached or boiled even if they are scrambled because I don't cook with fats or milk to prepare them.  If I do use some sort of liquid, I use broth, or the juice from the pepperoncini jar (don't laugh, it's good and adds another layer of flavor to the eggs.)

The calorie difference is probably accounting for extras that might be added at a restaurant, eg: milk, butter
I just use the egg count for: Raw, Whole, Fresh
Then you can add whatever you use to cook it in separately.

LOVE the pepperoncini juice idea.  I bet that is good!

If you're not adding any fat to the pan, you can just count it as a plain raw egg - there won't be any more or less calories in it. The database assumes that a fried egg is cooked with a certain amount of fat, a scrambled egg has some milk/butter in it, etc. because that's the way most people fix them.

but it still doesnt make sense that a poached egg would have less than a boiled egg.....

probably b/c a lot of ppl add butter or oil to the pan of a poached egg?

thanks everyone for the help. From now on I will just go by the calories in a raw egg.
