I?m supposed to eat 1,700 calories a day. If I burn 500 during exercise, I?d be at 1,200. Does this mean it?s safe to eat 500 more calories? Or am I not understanding this?

how old are you? and is the 1700 cals for you to lose weight?
Its not quite like that.
the 1200 is the MIN you must eat. But if you've worked out that you need to eat 1700 - then thats even better.
Sore then you need to add together your BMR ( the number of calories your body burns just by keeping you alive and breathing - for me this is about 1904 - but differnt for everyone) and how much exercise you've done -(eg your 500).
ten what you have is the total caolories your body burned (BMR+Exercise) then you take away what you ate - and you have your caloric deficit. - ie how much extra fat your body has to consume as energy to make up for what you didnt eat.
if this is 3500 over the WEEK then you will hopefully burn a pound of fat! so the idea is to aim for the DEFICT to be between 500-800 calories per day.
:)
Good Luck

I'm 25 and my BMR is 2200. I guess I'm still confused a bit. So my BMR is 2200 and to lose weight the tool suggests 1700 calories a day. I can eat 1700 calories and no exercise or more as long as the exercise will bring me back down to 1700. Example: I eat 2000 calories and workout and burn 300 calories, leaving me at 1700. This is the right way of thinking about it right? I'm not trying to avoid exercise btw, just throwing out examples.
I suggest not to add the exercise, but concentrate on maintaining the deficit which is the differenece between all that you burn and all that you eat.
As long as this is around 500 you'r doing well.
CC has this on the front page when you log in, below you'r weight graph so its easy to see.
Just keep the total expenditure 500 more than the total calories eaten, whatever these numbers are :)
