1500 calories?

Quote  |  Reply

I have a hard time believing you can actually lose weight on more than that amount. I know from my experience I do nothing but maintain at 1500, if not gain a little. So Im just wondering if any of you have success stories of losing weight on 1500 or more calories. It's just so hard feeling like the odd ball, that Im different from everybody on here.

Also, I have spent days with my friends sometimes, and counted up their calories. Most of the really skinny ones only eat like 800-1300 calories a day! (That is unhealthy right?) And this is not on purpose, they eat junk like pop-tarts, pizza, soda, but they just don't eat A LOT of it. I don't believe that most super skinny people just have a "fast metabolism". I know very very few actually do. But I think most just don't eat a lot, why is that okay for them and not considered starvation?

Sorry to be kind of annoying because I know it's said over and over again "1500 is bare minimum for teens". But I just really would like to know if you guys have actually had success eating this much, and it's just really frustrating that my friends barely eat anything! I don't understand how they are not sickly skinny from it. GOSH, so confused here :/

Any input would be appreciated!

(oh btw, I know my username is spelled wrong, haha)

I am losing about 1 lb a week on the diet of 1700 calories.  :-)

You spent the entire 24 hours with these friends, when you were counting their calories? Anything they ate that didn't come out of a box, you weighed first? If not, they most likely ate while you weren't there, and consumed more than you think they did.

Don't try to compare yourself to others - do what you know is healthy - which includes not eating below 1500.

Not sure how old you are, but if you're a teen plug your stats into this link:

http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html

It will tell you what your calorie intake should be for your age, height, weight, and activity level.

What is your height and weight? Perhaps you're not losing on 1500 because you're below your own set point. If you're underweight, or even at a low-healthy weight, you might not lose on 1500.

Or, perhaps you need to eat *more* than 1500 to lose - several people on CC have reported that they started losing once they increased their calories; if your calories are too low, your body holds on to weight - it's a holdover from days when famines were common.

If you are overweight and eating enough, you will lose weight on 1500 (or even more) calories.  1500 is absolutely not too many calories.

I've been losing 1-1.5 lb/wk eating at 1600 cal and I'm 5'5", 25 yrs old, 157 lbs.  (At least I am now!!!)

I'm in my thirties and lost an additional 15 pounds eating 2000 cals/day after I increased my calories to "maintenance" level.

I'm 23, 5'4", and for me, 1537 calories is for weight maintenance, 1230 calories is for fat loss, and for extreme fat loss I would eat 952 calories.

I know it's unhealthy, but that's what works for me...

Calorie Count's mission is to promote healthy and sustainable weight management. Please help our moderators follow this vision and respect the following guidelines.

  • Promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.

I wasn't promoting anything...the thread asked how many calories I eat, so that's exactly what I posted. I never said that anyone else should do what I do.

Saying that that's what works for you *is* promoting it.  And I really don't understand why you'd risk your health to temporarily drop a couple of pounds.

Thanks for the replies. And yes, I spent more than 24 hours with them. A whole weekend so I got to see what they ate for a few days. In school yesterday 2 of my friends didn't eat anything yet THE WHOLE DAY and it was 5:00. (one is 5 feet and 95lbs, and the other is 5'4 and 130) Im also spending this weekend with one of my friends, and I know I shouldn't think about it but Im kind of dreading it because I know I will count her calories and see how low they are and then be triggered UGH.

Stats..

Height:5'6

Weight:120

Age: 15

And to maintain I eat around 1400-1500, and I run on the treadmill for 45 minutes on the highest incline it goes 3-5 days a week.

Should I be eating more? According to what this site says I should, but it's so hard to accept that since Im basing everything off my friends. But it's right they don't do any exercise and they are not me. Also they are shorter than me.

Yes, you need to eat more calories. For you, 1,400-1,500 is far BELOW "maintaining"...you need more calories especially if you are running regularly. Take it from me...I screwed myself eating much too little when I was a teenager. CC's tools are for adults, not growing teens. This link is specifically for teens:

http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html

You will see for your age, height, weight, and being totally inactive your body needs 1,810 calories. That's being totally INACTIVE...you need more when you exercise regularly. I know it's hard for you not to be easily influenced by your friends when you're a teen, but just think...if you treat your body right in your teen years it will be much easier for you to be in good shape when you're an adult. If you restrict too much you will mess up your body into thinking it's got to hold onto every calorie. In fact, extreme calorie restriction will eventually affect metabolism and could lead to weight gain in the future, which is exactly what happened to me. Read this:

Look at this thread:

These are ADULT women eating more calories than you...a teen that should be eating more than them because your body needs more. Please educate yourself and make good choices so you will be happy and your body will be healthy! :)
