3000 calories a day...

Quote  |  Reply

HI

I'm sorta new here..I'm 6'1" about 288 pounds.  My goal weight is about 220-200 pounds. But I'm also trying to build alot of muscle in the process. My total allowed calories for the day is 3000. Does this sound high to anyone. I sometimes have trouble getting to the 3000. I'm even taking a high calorie protien supplement , about 350 calories per serving. I eat zone perfect bars through out the day as a snack but they are only about 200 calories each. I'm not eating junk. I eat things like eggs, low fat cheese, turkey breast, salads etc. really no junk food at all..I hardly even use things like butter or oil. My question is if I feel ok at say about 2100 calories is it going to hurt me or help me?

 Thanks John

imho it shouldn't, I'm the same height and was once at your weight too.  I stick to a 1600-1900 cal intake even when i my allowed was 3000.  I've never had a problem with calories.  I feel great and have so much energy during the day.
Do you have a wait training regiment in place yet?

3000 caloris is not too much and if you are active you'll find that its the right zone.

Yes I'm following a program where I work upper body Monday and Friday. Lower body on Wednsday and then alternate the zones and days. On the inbetween days i'm doing cardio and have one day of rest for the week.

So far it's been working good and I'm sticking to it. I can't wait to start seeing results

It's okay. Eating shouldn't get to the point that you're trying to make yourself consume more all the time. Perhaps, your body doesn't require that many calories. You may not be so active that your need that many calories to function contently. So I imagine you'd either have to raise your activity level, to be able to reach that target of calories daily. Or just stop eating as much. As long as you are full of energy and eating healthy. I don't see a problem in that. It's when people say " I'm full on 800 calories daily " that they have an issue.

Just because they say 3000 cals does not mean you havet o use them all up.  My friend and I aim at about 2000 or so knowing that if I go over that I am still in range to loose weight.  When you go out for dinner or have a rough day you have less of a chance to go over if you try to stay 2000-2200 cals.  It seems to work so far for me.  Also look at the burn meter and as long as you have a good spread and yet still eating decently you should lose weight.  Since3 mine dis not that high and I am a woman so they recommend less cal intake for us you could aim for 2500 cals.  Just a suggestion that is working little by little for me and a friend.  The big thing that we found out is DO NOT STARVE yourself, otherwise your body will store everything you eat to fat.  A Dr. told me that.  Good luck and we all are here for ya.

Just because it says 3000 doesn't mean you need to hit that. It's just a limit... don't go PAST it if you want to hit your goal. At your height and size (and gender because that def. applies as well) its actually very reasonable! And the fact you're trying to put on muscle... that seems right on par.

I would find out what your BMR is...basal metabolic rate. You want to eat AT LEAST what your bmr is, but you don't have to eat up to 3000 a day! If you want to lose weight and gain muscle mass at the same time, which is hard to do, you'll have to look more at WHAT you are eating, instead of how much. You really need to make sure you are getting TONS of protein, and also good fats!

I'm 6'0, 165 lbs and I need 3000+ to maintain 165 pounds, so you should definitely lose.

I run ( 8 min. miles or faster) everyday and burn 1000+ per hour, so you can see why I need so much.
