Hi All:

I'm in Kitchener. Started working out Jan. 28 at 174 lbs.

Now down to 152 lbs and have some muscle (I am male).

I retired in May 2006 when my wife got diagnosed with terminal cancer, so I have been home with her 24/7 for 2 1/2 years looking after her. I hadn't been doing anything, got lethargic, tired, etc. so I decided to work out at a gym.

She only has a few weeks left to live, so I take all my frustrations out at the gym, I go when the nurse is at the house with her.

I have more energy, sleep better, having lost weight. What I don't do is count calories, so I have decided to start a journal record of what I eat. I will need help with some of it, which is why I am joing this group.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Welcome to our Ontario group.  I'm sorry to hear about your wife.  Cancer is a horrible disease.  Sending you strength at this trying time.

Hi Steve,

I'm so glad that you found your energy and some stress relief in the gym. My mother was diagnosed with stage 3 colo-rectal cancer 2 years ago. We were very fortunate and she had a great surgeon who was able to remove it and she has now been given her one year all clear in May. She is the first member of my family on either side to live to the age of 65. Cancer has taken everyone in my family by 64 prior to her.

When she was diagnosed my life fell apart. I'm the oldest daughter, my parents are divorced although they are still good friends and my father came as often as possible they are in different cities. I gained weight, got depressed, got sick and became a miserable person for quite some time. Eventually I realized how hurt she would be if everything she taught me was wasted in sadness.

I started with yoga, then cycling, eventually back to the gym and getting my eating under control. I am still amazed at how much simply eating better, eating better foods, fresh foods, local foods really makes me feel. I've been doing a poor job this week, but overall the past 26 weeks have been pretty good and if you can find the stress relief in your workouts control in your diet will just make that better.

The food journals can be a bit overwhelming here at first, but once you have most of what you typically eat tagged, it's really quite simple.
