Calories in gum....

Quote  |  Reply
So during the day today so far I've kind've consumed a lot of gum. ( I was sick from school today and I was finishing homework and... well the gum was right there.) So I was wondering.....
Does anyone count things like gum or any other caloriefree/sugarfree sweetener?( i.e Splenda?) or should I take it out of my food log? Because when i added it into my foodlog,I realized that fifty calories wasted on gum is a lot.
Thanks for listening!

I don't usually count gum... you probably burn more chewing it than it contains!
Whether you add it to your food log or not, the fact remains that you had gum and the calories in it. If you're not adding it simply because you feel you wasted many calories there, then you're in denial.
I don't add in sugar free gum... never thought about it.
I don't usually count gum, either.  However, I know that the Eclipse brand that I chew has 5 calories per peice.  So, if you know you're chewing a lot of gum, the calories will add up, so you might want to count them.  If I only chew 1 peice during the day, then I don't count it.  :)
no. i chew up to a pack a day of dentyne ice sugarfree gum (i know, its bad to chew that much :p)

chewing gum burns 12 cals/hr. so check the cals in your gum to see how that figures. i just chew each piece for at least 1/2 hour (6 cals) and figure that i break even.

*blows a bubble*
I haven't chewed any gum yet this week of starting my CC acount. I thought wow gum huh...so I just went and got out my sugarfree extra gum and wow each stick is 5 calories.  Would of never thought.  I guess add the gum and then the activity of chewing it too.  I couldnt find it in the activity database though on CC.  Happy gum chewing everyone!
I don't count my gum I chew a piece whenever I am driving - ex smoker here and that is something I have to do still instead of a smoke.  I also chew gum when I work out.  I find if I don't chew gum my mouth gets very dry and I can't swallow or breathe and drinking water doesn't help.  I think the dry mouth is a side effect of one of my meds.  I sometimes wake u p in the middle of the night unable to breathe because my mouth is so dry.  I am thinking of trying that new "oasis" mouthwash I saw advertised, but it says it only lasts 2 hours.
If you chew gum and walk at the same time, you'd be way ahead of the game!

I figure that you burn more just chewing it than what is actually contained in the gum.

Chewing gum is also a handy hunger suppressent. It sends the message that you are actually eating something and it helps tide you over to the next meal.

I agree!

It even says that it is not a low calorie food, even though chewing too much does produce a laxative effect....
I've started chewing gum after giving up smoking. 2nd week now!

Has anyone found a gum that keeps it's flavour?

elttiks.x.
The gum i have has 155kcal per 100g, each pack is 14g and there are 10 sticks in a pack. so ((155/100)*14)/10 = 2.17kcals per gum. i eat 2 in an hour some times.. thats a huge 4.34 kcals.

According to  US research chewing gum burns 11 calories an hour. so im taking in 4.34 and using 11 so im burning over 2* what im putting in.   apparently if you chew gum throughout the day, you could expect to lose 5 kg of body fat a year.

Though im not sure chewing to this extent is a good thing for you. I would expect that chewing stimulates stumch acids as your body is expecting food when you chew. I dout this is a good thing for you.

I think Stride keeps it's flavor the longest.  It also stays relatively soft.

Orbit (my favorite) is 3 calories a stick; Trident is 3.5 calories a stick, MOST wrigley gum is 10 calories a stick... and if you chew your gum for one hour you'll burn 11 calories.
