Though moderate alcohol consumption of one to two servings per day can be included in a healthy diet, over-indulgence can have dangerous consequences. Because alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, excessive and even moderate alcohol intake can cause weight gain or prevent weight loss. If trying to lose weight, opt for a cocktail such as liquor with a zero or low calorie beverage such as diet coke to lower calorie and sugar consumption.
