Milk Information
Milk is especially important in childhood. Milk contains calcium and vitamin D that supports both physical and mental development. However, milk health facts are not only important for children. In teenage years, the calcium is important to increase bone density and prevent chronic diseases later in life such as osteoporosis. Milk consumption is also encouraged in adulthood to prevent bone degeneration. Calcium in milk is easily absorbed.
Healthy Milk
There are so many types of milk on the market that the choice can be overwhelming. Adults should chose either low fat or skim milk because it is lower in calories and fat than other types while still providing the same nutritional benefits. An 8oz cup of skim milk contains 83 calories and zero grams of fat. It is high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium, B vitamins, usually fortified with vitamin A and vitamin D. Typically adults should moderate consumption of whole milk because it is higher in calories and saturated fat. In addition, flavored milk such as chocolate milk should be consumed in moderation because it is higher in calories, fat and sugar.
