Calories in muffins - holy crap!

Quote  |  Reply

I ate about 3/4 of the top part of a small muffin today (which I estimated to be around 25g), and I browsed around for a non-healthy, commercial recipe. Turns out that that 3/4 of the small muffin top ended up being 100 calories! I couldn't believe it! So many calories in just 3 small bites of muffin! That just made me really sad =[

Some foods are worth the calories, some aren't.  If you like muffins, save them for a special treat and enjoy occasionally.
Most muffins seem to be more like cake.  Back in high school (way back), we learned to make muffins from scratch and they were much spongier, less of a cupcake texture.

LOL! Laughing I hear ya. I love Perkins muffins...especially the blueberry ones and I'll never forget when I learned how many calories they have in them. There's like 500 calories in just one muffin!! Frown So very sad.

But I agree with Jane...have a part of one as a reward when you've reached a goal. Good incentive!

I know! Someone brought Costco muffins to work once and I had a sliver - A SLIVER - of a poppyseed one (not even one of the good caramel apple ones) and I looked it up and figured that one little sliver was 40 calories! So not worth it.

I was looking at some of the packaged muffins at the store, and there were some big muffins that were 200-300 calories per serving... then I looked at the serving size, and it was only for like a third of the muffin... Not worth it.
so how many cals in one whole muffin? the commercial one?

I eat one everyday.. and gained weight very fast :(
have you ever tried uncle wally's smart portion muffins? I love the blueberry! they are decent size and only 80 cals and .5 gram of fat plus they have 3 fibers and 3 protein if I'm not mistaken?

Safina: In a small muffin (in a cupcake tin of about 2 1/2" diameter, I'm thinking), there are approximately 250 calories.

Amyjo: How big are they, when you mention "decent sized"?

The size of a regular cupcake I would say... they have brownies too! the are the best, a little higher in fat but the package of two ( which are the same size as the muffins) are only 3 grams of fat 3 fiber and 3 protien....they are my favorite!!!

Sorry 160 cals for the 2 pack brownie though
then a big muffin would be 500.

Depends on what you mean by "big."  Costco's big muffin is about 600 cals

i hear ya! i used to get the otis spunkmyer (sp?) muffins everyday at school last year! they are sooo good! but they are 440  calories! that is crazy!

it is about the same size. But I get a yogurt muffin. Not sure if it is the same cals.
I can't believe those evil muffins for 690 cals per one. OMG.I am hoping it was not what I used to eat everyday.

how would I know if it is costco's or not???
look at this

Triple Chocolate Muffin  dunkin donught

Serving Size 1 muffin   Servings 1   Calories 660   Calories from Fat 300   % Daily Value, Calories:   2,000   Total Fat 33g   51%      Saturated Fat 7g   35%      Trans Fat 0g       Cholesterol 10mg   3%   Sodium 460mg   19%   Total Carbohydrates 84g   28%      Dietary Fiber 4g   16%      Sugar 47g       Protein 7g

Well I think in general all muffins will have about the same amount of calories, provided that the size is similar.  I think costco muffins have more calories because they look "taller" than a regular large muffin maybe?

I share your feelings too. Cry I love raisin bran muffins and once thought they

were healthy because of the bran and the raisins in it. But ah...it's like 400

calories for a medium size muffin! Grrrrr!!

Oh geez I used to eat those too. They don't have them anymore but they still have the cookies, they usually come in 4's. I looked at their website and their is 180 cals for one! Thats 720 cals for 4 little cookies! I'm never eating those again. I estimated around 400 cals total but never that much!

Oh wow yeah I used to have an otis spunkmeyer muffin with lunch EVERY DAY until our school got rid of them. They're so good but so BAD.

Recently a friend of mine told me to get vita muffins, because they're healthier, but you had to order them online or something.  Has anyone ever heard of those before? And are they any good??

I love vitamuffins. They're not quite the same as a costco muffin or an otis spunkmeyer muffin, certainly not as good as a fresh-baked muffin from a coffeshop, but they satifsfy a craving and have some fiber and protein and vitamins.

I buy the deep chocolate ones and the blueberry or cranberry apple ones in the frozen section of the grocery store, or sometimes i buy a mix and make my own sf banana nut muffins.

You can order them online...I don't because it's expensive but they have so many amazing flavors like peanut butter chocolate chip and triple chocolate chunk.
