How many calories do I need to maintain?

Quote  |  Reply

Hiya - I'm totally lost as how many calories I should be eating per day to maintain my weight. I've just got to my target weight after gaining about 20lbs in recovery from anorexia. I'm an 18 year old female, 5ft 4.5" and very active (I exercise pretty much every day for about an hour). Hope you can help me! Thankyou.x

You would need to know your weight to put into most BMR and RMR calculators.

Here would be an example:  female   18 years old   very active   121 pounds  5 ' 4"

BMR = 2417 calories

RMR (resting) = 2294 calories

My recommendations if you want an accurate assessment of how many calories you need to maintain:

  1. record your weight each morning, around the same time each day--DO NOT get concerned about small weight gains one day or another--that happens to all of us
  2. record accurately how  many calories you take in each day--Yes, it is time-consuming and a nuisance for some people, but it also is the only way for someone to get a clear understanding of how many calories he/she needs for maintenance.  Calorie Count has an excellent data base to help you check how many calories you eat in your meals.

Best of luck!

CC's calculator is made for someone who is an adult, or over 21. You would want to check out one geared towards someone your age.

Good job on getting to a healthy weight, btw! I hope you are feeling wonderful in your new healthy body!

Congratulations! Recovery is a wonderful thing, isn't it? I'm in the same boat myself.

But also remember that recovering anorexics/muscle mass requires MORE calories. Increase slowly, but not TOO slowly, about 200-400 calories a week.

How much were you each to lose weight, do mind me asking?
