I'm am a 25 year old female, 5'2” and 171lbs. I got the book, Dieting for Dummies, and it gave me the formula to calculate calorie requirements. The book said I should eat 1849 a day to lose a pound a week, but on Calorie Count, it says to eat 1350 a day. That's a big difference. Which is right?
Answer
In theory, you need 1850 calories a day to maintain 171 lbs at a sedentary activity level. The book you read, Dieting for Dummies, uses a standard equation to find your Basal Metabolic Rate and then multiplies the answer by an activity factor to calculate your daily calorie requirements. Calorie Count utilizes the same approach, but then subtracts calories to set a new requirement so that you will lose weight. And so, if you eat about 1300 calories a day and have a light activity level, you should lose about 1.5 lbs per week. I found the answer by using the Calorie Target calculator in the Tools section at Calorie Count.
