Really.. how many calories in a normal/large sized apple?

Quote  |  Reply

I know the calorie intake for a "typical" medium sized apple is 80 calories, but I know that the apples I'm getting are not the medium size.  I get my apples at whole foods and they're generally a bit bigger.  I would call it a large sized apple, and I don't know how many cals I'm actually taking in from it.  Don't have a scale, nor do I want one, but can someone help me estimate the cals for a large pink lady?

Thanks

Call it 100.

Maybe not, but the only way to do a job right is with the correct tools.

Yes, but I'm already crazy enough with all of the counting I do at 23.  Adding a scale into everything will not be healthy for me.

I'm sorry, but that just sounds insane to me.  How can you possibly keep track of caloric intake if you have no idea how much your food weighs?!

I want the general idea of how I'm doing.  I don't need to know exact exact amounts.  Again I'm only 23 and just trying to maintain.

This confuses me too. I buy pink lady apples but instead of eating them 'straight' I slice them up first. I weigh the slices and they are usually about 110g - and 100g apple is 47 calories. So 110g of apple slices should be about 51 - 52 caloriess.... And that's basically the whole apple minus the core. Hmm..

well, an easy way to do it...WITHOUT A SCALE...which is a great idea if you're the obsessive type so don't feel bad...the key is consistency regardless of how precise it is. for example, if you were to eat 10 cherries every single day and you thought they were 50 calories but they were really 75, it wouldn't matter in terms of maintenance as long as you always counted them as 50 calories because when it comes time to adjust the reference point is accurate. it's like a scale that is inaccurate but it still tracks your progress if that's the scale you ALWAYS weigh on. you still can follow the trendline...anyway

so if you know that you bought 5 pounds of apples and there were 10 apples total then each apple is about 1/2 of a pound or 224 grams...which is a bit over 100 calories. does that make sense?

don't get a scale if it makes you uncomfortable, it is really unnecessary and successful maintainers don't all have scales so clearly it's not essential!!

I'm doing just fine without a scale.  I'm saving my money for when I go back to college in September as I do not have a summer job.  I'm 25 lbs down by eyeballing, working in comparisons and using the technique that chrissy described for logging apples (total weight divided by portions == weight of what I consume).

Don't worry jperonto, you'll do fine.  Just be consistent.

I know that you are fighting purchasing a scale, but darlin', you really do need one!  It is a tool that will last a lifetime.  Walmart has a great one for less than $30.00 that keeps me from writing annoying queries as to "how much is this worth", when you could figure it out yourself.Wink

Um, the OP has already said she'd become obsessive with a scale... so encouraging her to buy one really isn't smart. I don't have a scale and I'm doing fine - imo it's actually better to learn what a portion size looks like because of all the times in life that you end up eating at a restaurant, cafe, or at a family or friend's place. I know what portions look like so I don't need to weigh anything to know how much I'm eating.

When I typed in "pink lady apples" CC said it was 130 calories.

Walmart sells a scale for about $14.  You really need to buy one and weigh your foods in grams.  I plan to continue to do this even after reaching my goal.  It's the most accurate way to see how many calories/nutrients you are actually eating.

There is a post about obsessing with a food scale...sorry, but I consider that MUCH better than under or overestimating my caloric/cholesterol/fat/carb intake.  We are all gaining, losing or maintaing weight to become and remain healthy and weighing your foods before eating them is a major help in obtaining that goal of good health.

If you are away from the food scale and want to eat the apple, just measure it with your hand and then when you get home, do the measurement...there are circumferences for fruit/veggies and they will give an approximate weight.

Best to you!

SHE DOESN'T WANT A SCALE SO DROP IT!

Yes, you can successfully lose weight without a scale. I have been doing just fine using measuring cups, my eyeballs, and a bit of math. No, it is not as accurate, but it is nice and simple and all averages out in the long run.

And would you consider developing an eating disorder better or worse than possibly inaccurately tallying up food intake? I'm not saying that would happen, but if the OP believes it would be unhealthy for her I do see there is a risk.
