Calories and Restaurants in the News
Summary-
New Yorkers have been in the throes of sticker shock since this spring when the Big Apple became the first city in the country to implement a law forcing chain restaurants to post the calorie count of each food in the same size and font as the price.

I found this article incredibly amusing, and I pray that other cities do the same.
Reason: 7/30/08: Stickied. 7/30/08: Unstickied
rock on New York! maybe the 600 calorie muffin will shock people into becoming health conscious and aware of their caloric intake and content. They should make the entire nutritional label available. How many people would buy a Supersize Coke if there's a 400 calorie label on the cup? (Well, I'm sure a lot but it would get many people's wheels turning.)
Some places don't have menus, just a menu board so I can see why information would have to be right beside the item and cost. If the information is only available online then the restaraunt should have to provide computer access (at their own expense). I'm all for this. Bring it on. For that matter if it is a chain restaraunt then the corporate head quarters should have no problem posting the information on the menu no matter where the restaraunt is located, then maybe it could be worldwide. Afterall obesity is not just an American problem.
I love this thread mediar. I hope you keep posting good stuff like this.

I was actually at a restaurant the other day that provided seperate info sheets with the nutritional info if you asked. It was a cool solution. :)

Wow, I thats really amazing of the restaurant to do that. I wish more restaurants would do that in general.
Oh and bettypage4since I have so much "bored" time at work so to say, im usually wrapped up in the news all day :P. I usually focus on health/wellness news first then branch out to the rest. Some people would be amazed at the amount of shocking health news out there :P. Ill try to keep the more amusing articles posted around CC. Im very opinionated on health/wellness topics too is the downside, unless you can't tell in this thread :)
i think this is a WONDERFUL idea. i think a lot of the time people don't realize how many calories are in things and are too embarassed to ask. this should be the law all over the states.
I wonder how many other people have absolutely no idea how much food they are consuming let alone the caloric value of that food. Everyone needs equal access to more information about restaurant foods in order to make informed decisions.

No one is forcing you to eat at these restauraunts. But go ahead... let the government dictate everything to every business. Eventually it will be something that the majority of the people agree with that will affect you and your life in a negative way. In the beginning our government was set up to protect us from ourselves. We seemed to have forgotten about that.

Considering the fact that private business almost owns and runs the government, that is no surprise to me (ahem, pharmaceuticals, oil companies, banking industry). Oh please, get over it. Your assertion is so slippery slope ish that it's laughable. Not to mention that it's so reductive as to be absurd. As in, either A) don't eat at a restaurant or B) eat at a restaurant and be completely ignorant about the nutritional value. To force the either/or (lack) of options is completely reductive.
Private business and special interests have been using the government against the people to prevent consumers from getting the information they needed to make informed decisions. They have been doing this for years. I want more information. It's time to use whatever tools we can force private business's hand.
I am well aware that this country is full of people that feel the way you do. People that simply do not understand the ramifications of all of these intrusions the government has in people's lives. You people own the country now. I know this. Legislate everything the majority feels is a good idea. When it bites you in the butt I will be the dude standing in the shadows giggling at you. I have no further comments on this issue.

aka. I'm taking my ball, and I'm going home!
And cigarettes don't kill half the number of people obesity does.

haha
Right, because it's easier for you to sit on the side lines and criticize than it is to get off your butt and risk being wrong, isn't it? How's that working for you?

ROFLMAO!!! "I don't wanna play anymore!!!" WAAAAAAA!
I try to think of it not as a government conspiracy to control what we eat and what we dont eat, but more of a "Ignorance is Bliss" issue.
Mind you, the government isn't saying they're going to OUTLAW cheeseburgers and fries because they are bad for us. They just want you to be more mindfull of what you eat due to the current statistics on obesity in America.
For me... Ignorance is Bliss, but that same bliss is hell on your waistline and bad for your health.
Now - if you go to Applebees, let's say, and you've been salivating for a cheeseburger all day and have "saved up calories for it" then by all means, read the nutritional information and order your burger and enjoy it.
Everything in moderation means JUST THAT! Moderation!!! THis is more for those who eat 2-3 times a day, every day at McDonalds or Wendy's and don't realize they are consuming 3000-6000 calories per day in doing so.
I don't see this as a bad thing, in fact, I would encourage and support this law being implemented all across the world!
I wish California Pizza Kitchen would release nutritional info, though I'm quite sure it would prevent me from ever eating there again! ::sigh::

You're right, pixie, they don't post their nutritional information, however, they DO list allergens. :) But I did go to the "contact us" option and sent them an email asking why they list the allergen info and not the nutritional value info. LOL ;):) ![]()
Do you think people of NY will sue restaurants more now? I mean, if employee X makes your salad one day using exact measurements (which doesn't always happen in food services, believe me), and employee Y puts more croutons, dressing, and cheese on it the next day, couldn't the nutritional information shown be seen as "false" or "inaccurate" almost all the time, and couldn't someone (say, a diabetic or someone on Alli or with a medical condition that prohibits the consumption of large amounts of fat) then legitimately sue because of false advertising or lack of accurate disclosure? oh, my . . .
I know, I read way to many legal thrillers . . . but I just wondered how the city was going to enforce and check all those nutritional totals . . . what a job, huh? :D
