Calories in RINSED baked beans?
Original Post by thejabronisayz:
Someone posted a question about baked beans yesterday and ironically my mom is making two giant cans of Bush's baked beans tonight as a side for our BBQ. The sodium and sugar content for just 1/2 cup of these things (which is only 1/6 of a can) is ridiculous. Does anyone know either what type of beans Bush's uses, or better yet, what the calorie content would be if I rinsed off the sauce from the beans? Thanks
Dude, you are not even remotely close to overweight. Eating canned baked beans once in a while will not kill you, I promise.
To answer your question, rinsing them off will maybe save you 50 calories. Not worth it.

I'm at a very comfortable weight right now and I was not in any way attempting to nit pick over 50 calories. Counting my calories has now caused me to become much more health conscious, and in my mind, consuming over 600 mg of sodium and 17 grams of sugar for every 1/2 cup of beans is not very healthy. I would prefer to do without that, which is why I planned on rinsing the beans of their salty, sugary sauce. This only made me curious as to how many calories this would eliminate. If i'm going to be ridiculed for asking such questions then I don't know what the purpose of this forum is.
1) You should not be counting calories
2) You shouldn't worry about sodium
3) Yes the ingredient profile and sugar content is not great, but that doesn't mean you can't eat them once in a while. Canned baked beans taste amazing. As long as you don't eat them non-stop, it won't impact your health.
4) There's a fine line between being health conscious and having OCD.
5) The purpose of this forum (imo) is to help people come up with food ideas that taste good and help them meet their realistic dieting goals. Rinsed baked beans do not taste good, and will not help you meet your goals.
6) I am not ridiculing you. I am giving my input. You can disregard it; I'm just some guy on the internet who lost 75 lbs, not god.
Enjoy the BBQ.
I love Bush's baked beans when I don't have time to cook my own. I prefer the 'vegan' ones which have less fat. I hold the can over the sink and drain off most of that sauce, but I don't rinse them.
2) Sodium not only causes you to retain water but it also can raise your blood pressure. I personally don't want that, especially when there's over 600 mg in a very small portion of beans.
3) I agree that it won't kill me to eat it once - but I prefer to use that logic for things like cake, ice cream, brownies, etc: things I rarely ever eat but decide to treat myself to.
4) I do not believe that attempting to watch my sodium and sugar intake is OCD; however, that's just my opinion. Sodium and sugar are not good for you (again, my opinion), so if I don't want to consume it and/or if I want to reduce my intake, I should be entitled to do just that.
5) The purpose of this forum is, as you said, to help people come up with food ideas that taste good and help them meet their dieting goals. But I also believe it is the proper forum to post general questions about food in general - hence the title "Food." I placed my baked beans in a colander and rinsed off the sugary sauce and they tasted splendid.
6) I appreciate your input, I just tend to dislike it when people not only give me an answer to my question but also find the need to view my profile, look at my weight, calculate my BMR and my BMI, and then tell me that I should not be asking my question because I'm underweight. Good job on your weight loss though; 75 pounds is impressive.
I did enjoy the BBQ. I frankly enjoyed it more knowing that I was not consuming a very sugary and salty sauce with my baked beans. That was in and of itself very satisfying. Thanks again.
I have a great idea for you! Don't bother buying baked beans and rinsing them. Buy some white beans, also called cannellini beans - they're basically the same thing but you can either buy them dry or canned with no sauce. I eat these all the time and it's only 71 cals for 100g of beans (canned value).
Why on this earth would advising someone not to count calories be a good thing? There was a time when I was at a 22 BMI, now I am an 36. Maybe if I had been counting calories back then,I would have realized the importance of proper nutrition and balance. Geez, tough crowd here.

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
