11,000 calories a week?

Quote  |  Reply

Tell me if you think this is a good idea.  Instead of aiming for 1500-1600 calories a day, I am now thinking of doing 11,000 calories a week.  This is coming from the fact that I always used to eat around 1500 or 1600 a day M-Th, then Fri-Sun would eat more just from going out and making nice dinners at home with friends and my fiance.  I wouldn't go too over but since I didn't have too much of a deficit during the week I'd balance it all out.  This has been the case for almost a year...just maintaining my weight by calorie counting during the week then failing to do so on the weekends.  If I do 11,000 calories a week, and M-Th eat 1200-1300 calories, then I can have approximately 2,000 calories a day Fr-Sun which is more manageable when trying to be social, and still have at least a 3500 deficit for the week...

Info: 5'8, 149lb, 26 y.o., moderately active.

Does this make sense?  Do you think it will work if I can stick to it?  Is it unhealthy or bad to restrict more on the days I know I'll have more self control?  Does this constitute zig-zagging?  Thanks for all your help!!

It would work if you also establish a reasonable minimum per day. You can't go zero for 5 days and eat 5500 / day for Sat and Sun. With a 1200/day minimum your plan is OK IMO.

I should definitely specify that I am not able to eat any less than 1200-1300 calories a day without being very very sad, and therefore never ever do it.  Sealed

I say it's completely fine. It's what I do. I've recently changed my goal (increasing calories to avoid binging) to 1,700 a day. This is 11,900 a week. So if I only eat 1,500 for 5 of the days, I can eat 2,200 on Sat. & Sun. I call it "banking" or "saving" cals, but the trick is to not save too many. You wanna make sure you eat enough each day.

I am definitely interested to see how this works out for you, I don't really see why it wouldn't? I mean, it's pretty much what I do anyways, I just don't keep a strict count of calories on paper so it is hard to say for sure how many cals exactly I eat during the week vs. the weekend.

I have heard that irregular eating patterns can inhibit weightloss, but I don't know that this would be significant enough to qualify as "irregular". Either way I think it's a great way (in theory at least) to balance out the extra calories on the weekend. Let us know how it works out!

I don't know why it wouldn't work.  Sometimes if I happen to go low one day, I go out of my way to make up the calories the next day.  This is especially important since my calorie target is already quite low.

It should definitely work, it has for me in the past. I find this much easier to do than to eat exactly the same amount of calories each day-that's just not normal to me. Some days I'm hungrier than others, some day I work out more than others, some days I have more social events than others (like your were saying) so this is alot more maintainable for me. It might even be better, some people say that changing your intake (I believe its called "zigzagging") daily helps you to lose weight faster b/c it keep your metabolism guessing. Idk if that part is totally true though!

While I'm not losing weight, this is what I do in my maintenance.  I try to keep my burn at a set level day by day, but I keep track of my calorie goal on a weekly basis, so it helps me keep my eating a little more "spontaneous".

I just wanted to pitch in and say that I think this is a good practice for the future when you reach maintenance and (maybe) start eating more intuitively.

Just my two cents!

I've been doing precisely that except slightly more extreme for over a year--and it worked for me. My calorie gap was wider, but the average was a good amount and I still lost weight over the course of the year. I don't advise going below 1200 on your M-Th, but I did and still do, and it works for me, although I know it shouldn't. I have the same schedule (M-Th vs. Fri-Sun) and my stats are 5'7" 124lbs (starting weight was 140lbs).

Currently, my goal is to lessen the gap between calories, and I've been succeeding (the gap used to be unhealthily humongous and now it's much better)!

Hope this helped! (:
