calories and working out questions?

Quote  |  Reply
Hi , I had a question and wanted to see about some feedback on calories. Heres my question I am suppose to be on a daily in take of about 1400 calories a day. I am working out 5 days a week and wanted to see how the calories play a part if I am burnig about 700 calories off a day when working out.? Does that mean that if I consume 1400 calories by the end of the day and 700 of them are getting burmed off, will that only count as 700 calorie in take?? Please give me some feedback on this topic. Also would that mean that I was OK with uping my calorie intake to another 700 calories , so 1400 calories to 2100 calories since 700 of them are getting used up?

If you were to add those burnt calories to your intake (to comsume 2100) that's how you maintain your weight, I've you're trying to lose weight then no, don't add them
Hi 1michelle1, 1 pound is equal to 3500 calories. So if you want to loose 1 pound a week, you need to burn 500 more calories a day than what you eat. For example, I eat 1200 calories a day but burn 2200 calories a day. I am loosing 1000 calories a day which should make me looses 2 pounds a week. I exercise 6 days a week and usually burn about 600 calories during my workout. That # is included in the calories burned in a day and should not be looked at as extra calories burned. does that all make sense? Let me know if you need any clarification.

Hello again, I am a little confused. So if I work out 5 days a week and burn 700 calories a day that would put me at the 3500 for the week, which should shed about 1 lb a week right? than my daily intake is suppose to be max of 1400 calories, if I maintain that max on calories and continue burning 3500 calories a week, I will only loose a pound per week? Do you know how much more calories need to be bruned off weekly to loose 2lbs max? I don't want to go over board , but I do want to try to loose at least 2lbs a week if possible. Maybe I need to lower my daily calories, I don't really know. Feedback if possible. Thanks for previous responses. :-)
No, because by doing "nothing" all day you still burn calories. And your allowance takes that into consideration. So it depends on what your expenditure is.
You burn more than 700 calories a day! I burn about 600 at the gym but burn about 1,600 throughout the day, for a total of 2,200 a day. you burn calories doing everything you do, eating, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, sitting and watching tv. Look on this site under activities and check out how much you can burn doing certain things. just make sure that the total # of calories burned is about 1,000 caloies more than your total calories consumed each day and you will loose about 2 pounds a week.

Are you guesstimating your total calorie expenditure for the day or are you gauging it by wearing a heart rate monitor all day? I'm as confused as 1michelle1 is as I had an allowance of 1400 per day but was working out 5-6 days per week and feeling very hungry. I upped it to 1600 but am still not sure burning 300-400 per day is enough to lose weight.
Yes, I wear my heart rate monitor very often to see how many calories I am burning. I seem to average 2200 a day some days it's only 1900 and some days it's 2600 but a good weekly average for me is 2200. I only eat 1200 and I do get a bit hungry at times but I'm not willing to increase my intake untill I loose a little more weight.

Hi Moonsky9, thanks for your response, so you are saying to increase my weight lose to 2 lbs a week, you think I should by burn about 2400 calories daily if my daily in take max allowance is 1400 calories? also what heart rate Monitor do you have that monitors your daily calorie intake?? That sounds like a gadjet for me, ?

Oh, I forgot also based on the 3500 calories burned a week to loose 1lb based on 7 days, would that mean that you are at 15,400 calories for a 7 day period and equal to about 4 lbs a week loose based on that formula, I was just curious if that was the case.? Thanks Moonsky9
I use the polar F-4 heart rate monitor. A pretty basic model that counts your calories burned and runs about $70, I think. I don't know if your quite understanding this. 1 pound = 3,500 calories. 2 pounds=7,000 calories. If you are eating 1400 calories a day then you need to burn 2400 calories a day to loose 2 pounds by the end of the week. So that would be eating 9,800 caloies a week and burning 16,800 calories a week. See you would be burning an extra 7,000 more calories than what you ate for the week and 7,000 calories= 2 pounds gone. Does that make more sense?
Ok MOON!

Let me make sure that I have this right~

According to this site it says that I burn 2479 cal per day {not including excercise} ~ I eat between 1650-1750 cal per day~ I excercise 5 days a week ~ I burn on average 3000 cal a week in excercise~ so................... how many pounds should i be losing??

thank you!! much~
lol moonsky9 you just confused the bejuzem outta me lol... this is what I know though:
an average 25 year old who's 5'5" burns about 1786 doing nothing besides being awake. so if you subtract 500 calorites (500 [deficient] x 7 [days]= 3,500 [1lb]). so if you eat about 1,286 a day doing nothing you tech. should lose a pound a week.
But if you add 700 calories burned for 5 days then you should burn another pound a week for a total of 2 pounds a week.
Does that makes sense?
Moon!!

we need you gurlfriend!!!
come out come out where ever you are!!!!
Moon, That totally makes sense to me. Hey how did you get to know all these great facts on calories? Can I jump on your ship and get those facts, hah hah. You are great. So pretty much what ever amount of calories you are eating daily increase it by 1000 more of buring off to get to that 2 lbs of weight lose and for just one pound off a week would be the 500 calories burned daily for 7 days, to come to the 3500. It seems like the first month, I dropped about 5lbs now it seems slow and I have not seen any pounds come off in 1 week, still maintaining my daily calories of 1400. Is that common for beginers?
Also Moon, does that 2400 calories a day burned count as daily things that my body already will just burn. Do you know how to figure that out for me? I am 168lbs and 5'4. I don't know how to determine what I am burning total besides my GYM workouts. I could already be close right, Those calories count into that 2400 figure right? not just Gym workout calories?
Sorry, I was at the gym burning those calories!
alwayzfreetobeme- exactly, we both said the same thing just in a different way. but you meant 7000 calories not 700 right?

bmqb33- why is your 2,479 not including your exercise? Total calories burned is total calories burned, it includes your exercise.

1michelle1- yes, I think you have it. it's as simple as 1 pound= 3,500 calories! It's perfectly normal to loose much more weight in the first 1-2 weeks of dieting, it's water wieght. everyone's body is different but I know mine can hold up to 6 extra pounds of water! Look under tools on this site and then click on Expenditure. That will calculate approximately how many calories you burn each day. It takes your activity level into effect so this # will be total calories burned (includes workouts).
Its becasue I searched cals. burned not doing anything.. Sedentary..
was that wrong??
~ ok with excerise this site indicated that I burn 3217 cals per day..
that seems high??

I dont mean to be an air head!!! :(
wow, that seems really high. Are you an athlete? What are you putting in for activity level?
Hell NO!! {roflmbao!!}

I put in my weight 290~ and moderate excercise {6 days a week} an hour a day...

and thats the fig. it gave me..

thanx Moon for all your help!!
mmmm.....Don't know what to tell you. Invest in a heart rate monitor. then you'll have a little better idea of how many cals you burn. Good Luck, let me know if I can help in any way!
