I know this might just be in my head but even back when I was thin I always though I had abnormally large calves.....

Well I'm down 19lbs but I still don't see that big of difference in that area which makes me think I never will :( I try to stay away from cardio exercises that will bulk them up like large inclines on the treadmill and what not...I'm usually on the stationary bike which feels like it worths my thighs a lot more.

They are 16" at their widest point.....what about you guys...what is the "average" calve size around here

P.S. I'm 5'4, 138lbs....medium frame

my sister and I are exactly the same ... my sis is 5'8 and around 137 so she is thin and she has trouble with pants and boots because of the size of her calves...I think it might just be your body type.  me personally have a lot of weight to loose, but I imagine the shape of my calves will probably be the same as it was.

Sorry.
Big calves run in my family for the women. Most of the women are tiny but have very athletic calves.  Mine measure about 14" at the widest.  I love your question and hope some others will answer.  I'm 5'4, 122 , small frame (biiiig calves!).  Oh how I long to wear dresses!!  Usually pants for me!
I have the dreaded cankles.  I can't zip up boots more than an inch and haven't worn a skirt or shorts in 13 years or so.  I feel your pain.  I just can't wait to get plastic surgery.  Stupid genetics!!!!!!
Wow feels good to know I'm not the only one!!

That is the worst part....I hate wearing skirts or dresses....or even shorts sometimes!!! I usually stick to pants or capris that cover my big calves.
cankles?  That's a great word!
See, my problem is not calves...it's thighs.  It makes me look bottom heavy.  I hate it, but that's the way God chose to build me.  The only thing I can do is make sure that they look toned and not jiggly.  I've had to accept that no matter how much weight I lose, I will never have Model thin thighs.
I'd rather have bigger thighs than calves...at least it looks more proportionate. I mean when I wear shorts my calves look almost as big as my thighs!! Ugh...which can't be true because I've measured...but they aren't off by much...actually the lower part of my thigh is as big as my mid calves.....
I totally sympathize. I have really little thighs, and crazy muscular calves. I spent last summer biking 20 km every day, and playing tennis for 4-6 hours every day. That, apparently, will bulk up your muscles like no other.
At the end of last summer, my calves at their widest point were bigger than my lower thigh.

Unfortunately, the only way to make your calves smaller is to allow the muscle to atrophy. :(
Honestly at this point I wouldn't mind letting my calve muscles atrophy. But I don't want to stop my cardio so thats pretty much impossible.
Haha omg....I just measured my boyfriends calves....

1/2 inch smaller than mine!!!!!!

AAHH...I mean hes a pretty small frame but still...makes mine feel even huger....I just can't get passed this..lol
I guarantee my legs are a lot bigger than my boyfriends!  LOL  I'm not going anywhere near him with a tape measure!  My problem is my thunder thighs... I don't have any advice for you (sorry!) but I do feel your pain.
5'5 158lbs medium frame 14.5" on right leg, but I think it has to do with the fact that my feet are smaller (size 6-6.5).  My problem area is my mid section.  My hubby's calf would probably be 5 inches bigger than mine.  He used to bike 30 miles a day in San Fran.
Lol so I should probably just get him to bulk of his calves a lil bit...so then when we walk together mine can look smaller..haha :)
I guess theres not that many of us with large calves :(
Just a suggestion (I have large calves myself):  Go to duoboots.com  they're based on England and make boots customized to calf size....I'd always wanted to wear knee boots and a cute skirt...now I can!
I THINK THAT BIG CALVES ARE BEAUTIFUL!!! Especially with heels. Work it baby.
I wouldn't mind bigger calves.  Mine are ~15in.  I'm 5'7" with a large frame.  So far, I don't think they've grown.  But I've got almost no fat covering them.  (It's mainly on my waist).

I've got a friend who has huge calves and he doesn't work out or anything.  Sometimes it's just genetics.
My mom has these amazingly muscular calves...

and I happened to inherit them. It's a mixed blessing.

I choose not to fight with them...they're going to be what they are. Mine are 19" around...and they used to be bigger! I can never, EVER find boots!
DONT THINK FOR A SECOND that its easy to wear boots when your calves are super duper skinny like mine. I get made fun of, yes, you read that right, for my calves being so miniscule. The space between the boots and my calves are embarassing so I dont wear those kind of boots unless I find some that miraculously look decent on.

Also, I dont wear shorts!

I have recently been visiting the calf workout machine at the gym so we'll see.
