Canadians - what are your favourite low-calorie/healthy products?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey fellow Canucks!

I'm tired of hearing/reading about awesome products that can only be found in the States!  Post your fave foods while dieting/eating healthy that can be found in Canada.

I'll start: my fave cookies right now are New Sun's all natural sugar-free varieties (raisin and apple cinnamon) 60kcal each

Some of Loblaws' President's Choice Blue products are cool - I'm loving the vegetarian bolognese sauce. 80kcal per 1/2 cup

P.S. posts don't need to be brand specific - if you have any extra ideas about foods you like to use that are readily available in Canada - go for it! Smile

Fresh Okanagan fruit! Especially the peaches. Mmm....

Omg I love PC's Blue Menu items! I'm not on a low-cal diet but I love their healthy options! And I can buy them regularly now cause they sell them at Real Canadian Superstore, as opposed to Loblaws/Metro which is REDICULOUSLY overpriced.

Irresistables Original Flavour Soy Beverage (sold by Food Basics and I think Metro) is amazing...it tastes perfectly creamy and vanilla-y : )

Sobey's Compliments Organic 100% Natural Smooth Peanut Butter (that's a mouthful!).  It's a great-tasting natural peanut butter, and not too runny like other brands I've tried.  The price is pretty good too: $3.29 for a 500 gram jar.

Yeah, I'm tired of pouting everytime I see a ''Fage is awesome'' comment or a ''Jocalat Bars are heaven'' comment xD

  • Protilife's protein Bars, I recommend the 'Caramel Peanut', 'Chocolate cereal Crunch', 'Peanut butter Chocolate' (like a Reese!), 'Cranberry Pomegranate Explosion'. They all taste like candy bars. (Jean Coutu, Pharmaprix, Wal-Mart...)
  • SlimDown's protein bars, I recommend the 'Honey Yogurt' and 'Almond coconut' (Wal-Mart)
  • Joe's Travel nuts, 450-500g per bag. ie: Pistachios are 4.97$ for 450g, Cashews are 7$ for 500g...(Wal-Mart)

I don't think Loblaw's overpriced...I actually think that it's quite cheap! But maybe it's depending on the food you buy :)

I'd say that PC products at Loblaws are pretty mid-range in terms of price - but another way to get them cheaper is to shop at No Frills!

I think Jocalat Bars have started to creep into Canada in some health food stores - but I have yet to try them.  I'm loving Larabars though, darn everybody posting how they crumble the bars up in oatmeal - now I'm totally addicted! :P

Just to add to the Jocalat disscusion, I have found them at my local natural health food store. Actually, I recall them being there for quite awhile now. I only picked up the Chocolate Cherry (wanted Chocolate Mint, but they were out) Jocalat a few weeks ago and have yet to try it (am a little hesitant as I did not like the other chocolate varieties like Cocoa Mole and Chocolate Coconut Chew).

 *O*

Unfortuanately, they are 1,99$ ea. (larabar). I'll try to make them at home, will be cheaper. After all, it's just dates and nuts. :)

If you get them to work can you post the recipe?? I too can get larabar and Jocalot at my local health food stores but the cost does add up.

For Canadian products I'm pretty happy with the PC organics line (milk, yogurt, peanut butter, apricot jam).

I'm also addicted to "Woodland's Best" frozen berries and mangos (especially the wild Canadian blueberries--not sure if this is just in Canada or what but you can get them at any major grocery chain here). They're sooo good for adding to plain yogurt, pancakes, oatmeal, smoothies, etc. and Loblaws often puts them on-sale for $4-$5/600 gram bag.

In BC the Island Farms dairy line is really good and if you're in Vancouver Capers (now Whole Foods) has awesome made-in-house products.

I LOVE Stonemill 11 grain bread--60 cal/slice with lotsa good stuff in it (in Ontario--haven't seen it out west). For a treat ACE Bakery breads are delicious too, but a little pricey. I'm not sure how wide-spread their breads are--it's out of Toronto but can get it in many places around ON at least. I've seen their crackers (never tired them) in Edmonton just last week but ddint' look in the bread section.

Other than that i usually just shop bulk for grains/beans/etc. and go for fresh fruit, veggies and meat/fish (especially locally-raised bison!).

I've been making my own Larabars for a while now. I have a pretty detailed recipe on my blog (can access it from my CC profile). They taste pretty well EXACTLY the same, and have the same nutritional info. Haven't attempted Jocalat bars yet...I've stopped seeing them in health food stores in my area actually (Toronto), but I just found PB&J Larabar at Superstore a few days ago!!!

And I LOVE Stonemill bread! We get the Omega-3 enriched one from Costco - two huge loaves for one low price. Loveeeee <3

I love the concord/blue grapes at the superstore - I believe it says they are from the Niagara region in Ontario. Too bad they are now out of season :(

You can find Jocalat bars at a few places in Kensington, at the St. Lawerence market, whole foods, and I think at Fresh n' Wild. Hope that helps!

Goji berries (expensive tho) and multi-grain cereals like Red River or Bob's Red Mill which are pretty filling for only about 140 cals.

The Chocolate Mint one tastes funny.  I think it's because mint and dates really don't go together.  Chocolate cherry might be okay since Cherry Pie's pretty good.  The only Jocalat I've tried that I'd willingly eat again is the Chocolate Coconut one.  And even that wasn't as good as the non-chocolate Larabars.

I was at Whole Foods (Yorkville) just this past Tuesday and they had no Jocalat : ( Frankly when I did try Hazelnut Chocolate i was a bit underwhelmed but I still wanna try some other flavours : P

Olympia brand plain fat-free yogurt.

President's Choice Blue Menu Shrimp En Palloite with piri piri sauce. It's basically just shrimp, edamame, veggies, wheat berries in a spicy sauce, wrapped in parchment paper. Like 330 for a complete meal.

President's Choice maple balasmic salad dressing. Mmmm.

Eating Right brand (at Safeway) Chicken Vegetable Lasagna. I bake the whole thing, cut into 4 pieces and eat throughout the week for dinner or lunch. 1/4 of the lasagna is a decent serving but it still only has about 300 calories.

Life Brand Stevia. Not too expensive and the packages are the perfect size to keep in my purse.

I love Cobs Bread too... freshly baked and a great variety of whole grain breads.

I don't even eat bars like Jocalat, Lara, etc. but I thought of you today and wanted to pass on that Magnolia on College has a big selection of Jocalat bars.

Planet Organic's Cosmic Power Cookies, to die for! They posted the recipe on their website recently too... www.planetorganic.ca

Thanks for the heads up on the Chocolate Mint. Even though I am still hesitant, the Chocolate Orange seems to grab at me aswell. Have you tried that one? I may pick it up next time I visit my natural food store - which will be soon.
