Canned vs Fresh vs Frozen VEGGIEZ

Quote  |  Reply

Hey guys!

I'm a poor college kid who doesn't have a meal plan. At this point, I've decided that all I can afford is CANNED veggies.

What am I missing out on by not paying the extra $? Is the extra $ worth it for a poor kid like me?

The only thing you'll want to check on is the sodium levels.. If I were you, Id rinse off all of the veggies from the can. Even better is frozen veg. Dont let ppl tell you they arent as healthy.. theyre just as healthy as fresh, no preservatives and actually sometimes theyre MORE healthy depending on the season because theyre flash frozen so they dont lose any vitamins.. whereas some fresh veggies that have been shipped from another country have spent days sitting and slowly losing vitamins

I don't know what you are missing, but if canned is all you can afford -- it's way better than none. You gotta live on what you have. Good luck to you.

Really do the math on the difference. If it is only gonna cost literally a dollar more then pay the money. Some small bags of veggies cost the same as canned. I can't stomach the thought of eating canned vegetables. But if it is the matter of a couple of dollars and you really need the money then do what the previous poster says and make sure to rinse them off at least.

I think you will lose the sodium and packaging requirements that the veggies need to stay on the shelf versus the fresh...to cut some corners some towns have a farmers market that is at times cheaper than buying the canned or frozen...if cost is driving your train then you need to figure out what is within your means....I honestly believe frozen in some cases is a good choice...depending on the sale it can actually be cheaper than a can.

I'm not the biggest fan of canned veggies (although no-sodium canned green beans are the best!).  I live for frozen veggies. They are cheap, tasty and just as nutritious as fresh.  Also, sometimes you can end up trashing some fresh veggies because you didn't eat them on time!  For someone on a tight budget, i would stick for frozen.  the exception of course are salad fixings (lettuce, tomatoes, shredded carrots...)

Here is the deal about canned veggies or canned anything for that matter.  Why do we love fruits and veggies? The extreme amount of nutrients. And a food is at its peak with nutrients when it is first picked off the tree from the ground etc.  the more time it has to take being preserved and treated and all the time it takes before it gets to you. it literally has 1/100th of the nutrition.  On the food scale canned fruit is literally considered a heavy food. Idk where canned veggies is on that scale. But i can assure you, frozen or fresh is what you need to do.

Hmm.  Canned food doesn't seem that much cheaper to me at all.  How much does a huge bag of frozen veggies go for around you?  Just get the cheapest ones of those that you can,  and use them responsibly!  Make things that are cheap and filling like beef stew.
