I can't believe it

Quote  |  Reply

I have to share this with you guys!

Yesterday I achieved something I would never have thought possible! I actually speed-walked  10km!!!!

Now I know this might not sound like something special- but I have arthritis and have suffered from it since I was 3 years old- every joint is effected and I have some serious damage and restrictions to cope with everyday!

I started walking a while back... stopped for winter and then took it back up 9 weeks ago... Since then I've been religiously walking everyday... I bought myself an extremely good pair of shoes- light, flexible and supportive... and well have just gone for it!

Last week I walked each morning between 7.2 and 7.8 km... I alternate my walks- doing different hills and stretches also concentrating on how i walk, speeding up from time to time... trying to keep pace... letting my arms swing... breathing regularly and everything.

On Saturday I did 9.8km and then Sunday was the big day!!! It was raining cats and dogs- but I just needed to do this. so I braved the weather and....

I can now walk 10km without a break and without pain! It took me 1.26hours to do the stretch- I am so proud! I feel like I'm high on excitement.

Good for you. It is great when you meet or beat one of your personal goals. Such a good feeling. Congratulations. Smile

thanks:-)

What do you mean it "doesn't sound like something special"?  That's great!  Keep up the good work.

OMG, I  know, what you mean. I am asthmatic and I was always being kept away from sports by my overprotective parents. When I slowly ran/jogged my first kilometer at the ge of 21, it felt like the whole world has changed. And believe me, it will be getting better and better! Congratulations!!!

I can certainly relate. I have a very rapid heart beat, and decided last year that I was not going to let it get in the way of me running. I ran my first 10K last year, with walking breaks, and finished it in 1hr 15 mins. This year, I ran the whole thing, and finished just under 1hr 10mins. I was thrilled. (it sounds as though you are walking almost as fast as I run!!!)

Keep at it!! That is awesome!!

Walking is awesome. I march 3 to 5 km every day for maintenance, even if it's raining or snowing, and if you wear the right shoes the risk of injury is minimal.
Running in the city is pretty risky, repeated impact with the hard pavement can hurt the tendons, improper posture hurts your back, you could get bitten by a dog, run into someone around a corner and so on.
