Can't control the boredom!

Quote  |  Reply

Hello everyone. I'm a 16 year old girl who weighs 167lbs! I'm not generally fat, it's all collected in my thighs and breasts. But I want to lose it, you know? I've tried being on a diet before and it just didn't work out, but now I'm serious and I hope that I can lose the weight I need.

Now onto my problem I need help with!

When I'm bored, I eat! All the time. Everyone tells me, 'distract yourself'. Well, even when I try I can't get my mind off food! I'll try to play a game or do something to move around, but I still can't keep my mind from the dark corner of nibbling on some jelly beans or having a cup of oodle noodles. But now, I've cleaned the cabinets of all the unhealthy things. I hardly have any food anymore! but my parents own a restaurant, so getting food isn't a problem.

But are there any tips that actually WORK to keep my mind off food when I get that craving? I hate being a bored eater!!

There are many websites out there that share tips on how to avoid eating because of boredom. You can buy a really good book to read, paint your nails, play some videogames, ask a friend out etc. There are many things to do to fight the urge to eat. ;)

STAY AWAY FROM THE SUGARY SNACKS!!!!!!!

lol

have a huge bowl full of low cal vegies and fruits (on hand) so its always ready if an urge strikes XD  also try to hide all those unhealthy snacks in a place that would be a bother to get to like the car, the attic, ... a realy high shelf XD

also drink loads of water! i practicaly sleep with a water bottle at hand XD

Those are some very good ideas but it comes down to if you are ready for this. It is a lifestyle change. I have tried many times in the past as you have and never got any where due to the same problem. But then you have to be honest with yourself. If you can not leave those foods alone.....You are not serious enough about losing the weight. You have to be able to say no to the non healthy foods and be able to go for the fruits and veggies if need be. When you start feeling yourself  having this urge to eat, go for the bottle of water first. Drink at least 8 oz of water and then see how you feel. Make sure that you are eating enough throughout the day and eating the right foods.  And the most important thing is stick with it. DOnt give up. We are all here to keep you going.....Good luck......

What?!  I would certainly not agree with christiecomp.  You can definitely be serious about losing weight and still lose to the urges every now and then.  It's not just sheer willpower that gets people through weight loss, it's finding the right way to do it that meshes with their personalities.  If you eat when you're bored, you have the habit that's going to be hard to break.  So wean yourself off of that habit, or turn it into a good habit, like someone else already suggested.  Keep raw fruits and veggies around, and the act of eating something should keep you satisfied.  Maybe you can also write down a check list of things to do when you're bored that don't consist of eating, and when you find yourself fighting the boredom cravings, consult the list.  It's a common habit people have, and it's commonly kicked through all sorts of ways, you just have to find the best way for you- something you *want* to do.

Thanks to all of you. And especially thanks to Kristen. After reading Comp's post, I got a little let down, thinking, 'Well, am I really serious about this?' I've been doing an okay job; the other night I ate an Oreo and thought about having more, but decided to just throw the bag of them away. So that stopped that. It's still a little hard; I'm hungry a lot and I've been eating two/three meals a day. I don't have anything to nibble on inbetween yet, so I don't bother trying to have snacks while I wait for my next meal. It's not hard, but at the same time there are so many things I wanna eat! Oh well, I just can't fall into a bad habit again.

Thanks for all of your support everyone! This is a lot harder for me than I thought, but I'm really gonna keep it up this time.

Wannbehealthy2, l think why it is hard on you and why you are hungry all the time might be that you are not eating enough. lf you are only eating 2 or 3 times a days, how many calories do you eat in a day?

um...boredom isn't an infliction.  it's a function of choice.  if you're bored, get interested.

I've been eating around 900-1100 calories a day. My goal thing says I'm only suppose to eat around 1200.
