I can't cook.

Quote  |  Reply
I'm 16 and since forever, my mother has cooked for me. I can cook basic things.

Maybe this is partly my fault because I never asked her to teach me, but she never really forwarded the information so I just never learned.

Now I'm sitting here at 16, fat and she cooks us chips, fry-ups etc every. single. day. She doesn't buy in too much healthy stuff - she buys in fruit and soup grudgingly because I have a fit if she doesn't.

I need help in learning how to cook so I can make my own meals. Is there any websites which you know of which have simple, yet healthier recipes on there?!

Would be appreciated...

Perhaps you could talk to your mom about wanting to make changes....I have a 12 year old and she loves to cook. Perhaps this is something you and your mom could do together. Discovering something new and exciting would give you new things to talk about and something you could take pride in. Go to the used book store together, look up sites online...discover nutrition....Give it a shot and Good luck!
Congrats on making your mom buy healthier stuff, and for learning how to cook. I really like cooking for engineers too (link in someone's previous post) because the directions are easy. If you can save up some money, the George Foreman grill comes with a cool little recipe book, and you can get them really really really cheap now ($15 at some places). Good luck! ~Rob
Here are a few of my recipes that I think will appeal to the whole family. k8iemay, I think you could make some of them yourself.  The Carrot Raisin Salad is really easy to make.

Buffalo Chicken Fingers

Carrot Raisin Salad

Lean Meatloaf

Sweet & Sour Chicken

Three Bean Chili
If you can read and follow directions go to the library  and check out a low fat cook book, AND COOK WHAT SOUND GOOD TO YOU.
I couldn't cook either (once I messed up Jello, yes, Jello).  Now I cook for me & my boyfriend.  Bake instead of fry, if you aren't sure it's cooked all the way, cut it in half.  Pork should be white like chicken, and chicken should run clear, not pink when it juices.  George forman grills are great too, but the stuff you are grilling can't be that thick.  I make these potatoes that are good, melt a tiny bit of butter in the micro and pour it into a tupperware with the cut up bite sized potato chunks and add a dash of parmesean and some pepper and a pinch of sage.  Put the lid on and shake it up until all the taters are coated.  350 degrees for 35 minutes.  Just remember 35 and you got the temp and the time.  Poke it to be sure with a fork or something (NOT your fingers) it should be firm but not like a rock.  Experimenting is fun too.  Usually if it smells good, it tastes good.  Now I love to cook!
I have weekly battles with hard boiled eggs. Yes, I'm almost 30years old, and I still can't make hard boiled eggs right.  this morning's egg was slurpy.  I've burned them before too.  Smart of you to try picking up some cooking skills while you're still young!  I'm sure your future husband will be happy!  LOL

3 appliances I couldn't live without:
  • Microwave
  • George Forman Grill
  • Toaster Oven
You can cook just about anything with those 3 things.  My meals are super simple.  Typically something steamed in the microwave, toasted in the oven and grilled.  haaha!  Grilled chicken and whatever variety of Mrs. Dash is always a simple winner.  In fact that's what we're having for dinner tonite!
I'm starting a new thread on how to boil an egg
