Can't Fight It...Must Have More...
I've had three pears today. Now, I'm definitely not down on
myself for this, as it wasn't like I grabbed three pears and swallowed
them all at once. I had one with breakfast, one with lunch, and
one just now before I go fix dinner. And I mean, come on, we're
talking pears here, not exactly in the same category as, say, Snickers
bars.
But I never do that. I'm not a real "craver"; when I want something it's usually in a general category, like..."I want something salty" or "I want something sweet." But for two days now...I can't get pears out of my head.
Sweet, juicy, tender pears.
And I don't sit down and eat them over a period of time. I carefully ate my scrambie egg this morning, took ten minutes to finish off my two slices of bacon, but when I reached for the small bowl containing the pear I sliced up, it was gone in an instant. Same with lunch. Each brussel sprout got a careful once over, and a thoughtful chew; I ate small bites of my mashed cauliflower while I watched some junk on YouTube, but when I reached for the pear slices...it was like they disappeared into a dimensional void in a split second.
Just writing about this makes me want another pear.
What's the downside to this, if any? They are pretty high in sugar, no matter how many nutrients I can squeeze out of them. And I really don't want this to turn into a slippery slope thing, where I let myself eat five pears a day and then start letting myself eat seconds at every meal, and it gets to the point where I'm just eating whatever I want. How does one actually deal with what could be considered a "healthy" craving, and subsequent indulgence of said craving, before it actually becomes unhealthy?

Honestly, I don't think eating three pears a day is an unhealthy craving.
Don't frighten yourself with this. You can't really mean that three pears will send you eat seconds at every meal!
Probably it was just your body needing some nutrient - who knows, maybe it WAS the sugar! YOu need sugar too, you know. I tend to crave bread and rice and oats nowadays, but I know this is because I am extremely stressed, and that stuff is full of vitamin B which is good for your nerves. Also, carbs for my brain.
In answer to "how to deal with what could be considered a healthy craving before it actually becomes unhealthy" - it will become unhealthy if you spend too long bothering about it. Tell yourself: OK, today was a pear-day. And then simply FORGET ABOUT IT. It is not worth the time.

I'm the same way about cantaloupe! I think of it as its better to crave these types of foods then my old craving of french fries!
| have the same addiction with bananas. | don't think |'ve ever gotten tired of them.
If | see some ice cream in the freezer or something, | can just shrug it off and go, "Meh.. It's just ice cream".
But if | see a banana sitting out, it's practically like | have to slap myself to stay away from it if it's not on my eating schedual!
It's the same with apples too. If | see a shiny, juicy looking apple sitting in the fridge, all cold and crispy..
|'m glad it's fruit and not something else, like others here have said. =x

I went through something similar with grape fruits. For about two weeks I couldn't get enough of them and was eating 2 large ones a day. One day I woke up and wasn't in the mood for one and they've now returned to being just any other fruit. Funny though, I have been eating a lot of pears lately, too!
I guess it's pear season?
Just finished off another one, but it was my first for today.
Funny thing, last night my roommate got home from the grocery store and stuck two pints of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer...one of the was Cherry Garcia, which is my favorite, but I didn't even give it a second look, I just eyed the pears he bought like a rabid dog.
I guess I just have to get this out of my system.

I was about to say that I wish I could crave those things rather than chocolate...then I thought about it a minute and I haven't craved chocolate in about two weeks. Just thinking about chocolate now doesn't create a craving like it used to.
Just had to share that.....I think any fruit is taking it's place!
