Can't get a grip.

Quote  |  Reply

I have been struggling with late night binging for almost an entire year now! its caused me to gain 10 lbs back and makes me feel aweful ab myself. I duno how to control it. I like wake up physically hungry a few times throughout the night. When I wake up I crave sweets and carbs.

I have been trying to get a grip. Eat better throughout the day. Alot of veggies and protien, but I still cant seem to control these late night occurances.

Anyone have any idea what I can do?

I need to lose these 10 lbs! My goal is for them to be gone by the end of the 1st week of december.

linz, ten pounds is just a symptom.  you have to figure out what's really going on.  if you're genuinely hungry at night, you're not eating enough during the day.  if you're eating at night to self-medicate anxiety or some other problem, you have to take care of the problem.  forget the weight and deal with the cause.

i agree with pgeorgian: if you'Re that hungry it's because you don'T eat enough during the day.  what helps me with latye night hunger?  i eat a big breakfast, a decent sized late lunch, and a light supper with dessert (i love it, can't give it up!).  now i'm not hungry at night.  basically: you have to find something that works for you.  what youR'e doing now isn't working since you're still hungry.  maybe the hunger is stress related, so look into that as well.  but going to bed hugnry is the worst, so try to eat mroe during the day.

While I agree with what was said by in the previous resoponses, I'd like to add that quantity of food during the day is not the only factor...satisfaction is likely playing a huge role, too.  When I lost my first amount of weight, I did it by eating very little, primarily chicken and toast, and exercising a lot.  It was great and worked for a few months, but as my excitement started to wear thin, so did my resistance to late night eating...so I started eating at night, and typically eating sweets and carbs (basically anything pre-packaged and bought for my kids!).  Once I started allowing myself to not only eat more but also to eat foods that satisfied my tastes I was far less likely to pick and binge at night or at least more likely to catch myself before it got too late.  You're not alone!  And if you pay attention to your mind and body, you can overcome it.

i agree with the posts above, its most likely emotional and/or not eating well during the day.

first you have to look at why you are binging. that will take some time. my reasons for binging were many layered. for me, one of the main uses for binging is/was a coping mechanism. & you have to not berate yourself for having a coping mechanism, its counterproductive & frankly its just being human. but you need to look at why you need to do this when it seems you do not actually want to.

if its just that you are not eating properly during the day, well then you need to play around with that. i found that if i ate 5-8 times a day with some protein in every meal/snack my energy levels zoomed & hunger pangs leveled. i was able to lose weight as well, even though i did a few no-no's like eating very late at night, sometimes 10:30pm even 11pm (i usually worked out late anyway & saved my biggest meal after working out). but it worked for me. this was through a lot of trial & error though.

Have you gone to the doctor to ensure you are not diabetic?

Thank you all so much! This is why I love calorie-count.com Because of the support this site offers. I owe my weight loss success to this site!

That NYT article totally describes me. I am lucky that I am tall and active with a fast enough metabolism that I have only gained 10 and its taken a long time for this weight to accumulate. I dont look all that bad, but I am lehtargic and feel bad about myself.

I definately have been dealing with alot of emotional/life crap lately. that totally makes sense...

So it starts now! i am going to fix this by eating three meals a day. lots of protein and a sweet healthy snack.

I know how ya feel...  I have gained back about 5 of the lbs I had lost since being on here.  My major downfall has been in the evenings.  I eat healthy all day..  I eat plenty of calories but in the evening during my kick back and relax time I have the urge to munch sooo bad.  I have tried carrot sticks, plain popcorn, anythnig that isnt too horrible and nothing works..  it's like I'm not happy until I'm scarfing down candy or nachos.  UGH..  i've been doing much better this last week since I keep telling myself I'm not hungry and only bored/stressed/upset you name it but its still very hard  grrrrrrr
