Why can't I shift the weight off my belly?
Asked by anonymous on Mar 21, 2008 in Weight Loss

I eat a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables, and I do not exercise regularly, though I do cycle several times a week.  I am 6ft, just under 13 stone. I also suffer from stress, and I wonder if it could it something to do with the anxiety level causing a large stomach?

Answer

Stress makes fat accumulate in the abdominal area.  The reason is Cortisol, a hormone released during stress.  Learn to control stress through exercise, relaxation or counseling to stop amassing fat.  Next, look at your diet.  Two diets have been shown to selectively reduce belly fat: The Mediterranean Diet, which emphasizes fish, whole grains, dried beans, nuts and seeds and produce, and the whole grain diet which replaces refined grains with unprocessed grains.  Both diets are very high in fiber and contain little meat.
