Why can't they come out with a calorie scanner!!!?

Would make it so much easier to count calories.....push a button on a device while aiming at your food and it gives you complete breakdown of calories and other useful information

Science Fiction type idea lol I wish...Anyone think it could be done at some point and ideas on how it would work?  I mean somethings that used to be regarded as could never happen are now reality :) (Too bad even if it could happen it'll probably be when I'm dead already lol)

Or wouldn't it be great if Resturants could at least all have calorie information and they had a bar code next to all menu items that you could scan.  Depending on preparation the numbers of course are off, but at least an estimate would be nice.

Oooooooh That would be awesome!

it be cool if u could scan urself adn then it would tell u how much calories u ate today

Yeah but you would use the device to scan yourself first and it would tell you how many calories you need to eat so you could match your needs with the food choices.  It would also tell you what you need in terms of protein, fat, and carbs, as well as vitamins, minerals, and water.
If you scanned yourself, would it not say how many calories it would be if someone consumed YOU?
"If you scanned yourself, would it not say how many calories it would be if someone consumed YOU?"

Only if you used the wrong scanner.

Haha...I'm all for the restaurants and calorie information idea! I think it would be totally possible to list the calories next to the dish - you wouldn't even need a barcode! Can you imagine how much healthier foods would be if people were only willing to order the low-cal items?

hm...i have a feeling though i would be one of those people who goes around and zaps people (or even better, their children) and goes "mmmm..." just for kicks Sealed

Yeah that would be awesome! There is a next best thing. A gram scale that tells you the calorie count of almost anything you put on it. I have one and it is fantastic. No,  I have not taken it to a restaurant but I am tempted.

What is this magical device and where can I get one??

edited to remove double post :)

Actually, I heard there is some program (it might be part of a research study and not rolled out to the public yet???...I can't remember), where you use your cell phone to take pictures of your food, then send them in regularly to a site where nutritionists anaylze the calorie and nutrient content---so your "science-fiction"-type idea isn't too far away....

how do they analyze calorie and nutrition content.....they aren't there....they guess by looking at what the food is composed of?

and the gram scale.....that just weighs food right?  that alone doesn't tell you how many calories something is without knowing how many calories for a certain weight/serving....

it doesn't automatically tell you the calorie content of what you put on there...

i see there are gram scales where you can select the food you are weighing so it gives you a calorie amount.

this is similar to what i was saying i suppose it does make it easier but only if that exact food item is in the database....there are alot of different food items if it has everything in there than that would work, but thats also true for the caloriecount database.

The problem is that the database doens't have every food out there that you may find.  A device that scans the item for calorie/nutrition information would scrap the need for a database that may not have  what you want in it.

I've had this idea for a long time.  Ideally you would scan the barcode of a product, enter the serving size, and the device would keep track of everything you consume and give you detailed reports.  You could use it to "audition" foods that you're thinking about eating and see what impact it will have on your diet before you eat it.  Unfortunately, it would require the cooperation of too many different parties to likely become reality.

zapping people?? Sounds like fun so count me in!!Cool

Next best thing is already here...

My scale is made by "Sater".  Besides weight, it measures calories, sodium, protien fat, carba, cholesterol and fiber of 900 porgramed foods and/or ingrediants.  It stores and recalls memory for a day of totals as well.  Mine is a few years old so there may be a bigger data base by now.  Thre great thing about it is that for example: If I have a chicken breast that weighs 7.3 oz, it will calculate based on exactly 7.3 oz.  I love mine.

that would be amazing. I would buy one for sure! haha
