Capoeira - the best all body workout
I'd just like to throw this out there for those folks who want to try something other than Yoga or the Gym machines. I've been training Capoeira Regional for about 10 years and still love it. If you have a group in your city you should check it out. If you have multiple groups I would suggest trying a class with each to see which one has a style that fits you best. This will work your entire body, no doubt!
For anyone that doesn't know what it is: It's an Afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates music, dance and acrobatics. Don't be scared by the acrobatics or dance aspect, EVERYONE can learn. I teach both beginners and more experienced levels and all the moves can be tailored to an extent to work for you.
Also, this is a group sport so it's a great social outlet as well. My group is my second family! :)
but it's AMAZING!! I used to go to a capoeira club at college, but now it conflicts with my schedule. I miss it sometimes. I loved the joda, singing the songs and the energy. There were some hot dudes who did it too...
anyways, the OP is dead on. All of the capoeristas ive seen are tight men who are in absolute perfect shape. Its a really fun workout, makes you flexible too! I'd highly reccomend it as well!
p.s. OP do you know maestre Fran? I beleive he works with Maculele in atlanta and he once came and trained our group. He was AMAZING, and his birimbao sounded beautiful.
I've gotten a chance to go to a couple of the Maculele group's batizados in Milwaukee with Mestre Fran. Fun stuff. He seems pretty laid back.
Deflepfan - it's actually not even remotely similar to what's on the Turbo Jam video as that is what we lovingly call "capaerobics" :) Still a good workout I'm sure but if you ever get a chance try out a class.
Soooo much fun, and now it's usually about half men, half women in most of the classes I've been too around the country.
Thanks for the tip. Are there any good instructional DVDs on Capoeira available for a hermit-mommy like me? It sounds like I would *love* it! LOL I should go find a class though, to get out of the house and around people.
im a lil late on this one... but u can't really do capoeria thru an instructional video... it wont help u... u need to take classes... look up videos on youtube... i like to call it break dance fighting (really brazilian martial arts).
I was wondering if anyone knows of a good capoira based workout DVD or instructional video? I found one that is coming out in a few weeks and uses some capoira moves but wanted something less abs and more capoeira... (Rev Abs Workout ? ) .
Does anyone know anything or can anyone give me a suggestion? I'm a little broke right now and cant afford to join a class. The only one available near my house is a package of like 15 classes at 375 bucks.
Obrigado
Oi,
I am part of a south London based regional capoeira group, Engenho da Rainha, and would definately recommend it. I've been doing it for about 4 years now and am so addicted, I love it!
I agree with Guerreira, capoeira is such a social thing which i never expected, my group are indeed my second family!!
If you can't afford classes a good book you can use is 'Capoeira 100' by Gerard Taylor which has photos of how to do the moves.
However I would say that capoeira cannot really be learnt on your own, you neeed to interact with other people, it's really the only way to learn proper technique and timing, never mind the singing and instruments for the rodas which are the most important part of capoeira.
Some groups do taster classes for free so go along and give it a try. Prices do vary from group to group so depends where you are based. If you're in the UK you're welcome to come to our classes.
Axe.
Oi Aguardente:
Muito obrigado from Miami. I will get the book and save up to do the classes. There is another 3 guys looking for the same here in MIami and we might start a small group and divi up the costs.
Thanks for taking the time to repsond!
