Hi, I have been playing capoeira for approx 4 years now but have recently had to miss a lot of training due to a shoulder injury and am missing it like crazy!!!

Also i've been piling on the pounds without my regular training sessions and have resorted to working out at home instead which is actually easier than i thought although it is hard to push myself...

For anyone who is looking for a fun group exercise Capoeira is it, it totally transforms your body and fills you with confidence without you even realising it.  Most groups are extremly welcoming and love to socialise.

I originally started after recovering from a broken leg and couldn't even run around the room without being out of breath.  I lost 2.5 stone in a year just from training 2 days a week whilst still eating loads of rubbish. FAB!

Now i've found CC i am watching what i eat for the first time and the results are amazing.  My shoulder is also fixed and I can't wait to get back to training!

Would love to hear from any other capoeiristas out there, or anyone else with a similar interest.

Eh capoeira!  Smile

I made a Capoeira guy ta-pout once...lol...he was crazy....like freaking yoda jumping all over the place.  but I got his rhythm, and hurt him bad.

In my Opinion....it's a great art to learn...fun, and good for the body.  You can make lots of Friends doing it too. very very fun, and a good little workout....just don't go trying to fight people for real unless you are very very very very very very very well versed in the art...lol.

Hey, eddie that was you? ;) (Or more likely this one)

Oh, I am a HUGE fan of Capoeira. I think it's the most beautiful thing to watch.  Unfortunately I'm not a practitioner.  There's no groups here in the boonies where I live.

So if it's ok with you, I'll just hang out in your thread and be envious ;)

hahahaha....no not even close....the guy was jumpy like that though, but he was good...and his hits hurt, but I took care of him...he wasn't faster than me...lol...

I saw that movie by the way...it was pretty cool.

Everyone always shows that clip from Never Back Down...Lol!! Some people think it's real..As much as i love capoeira i agree it doesn't work in MMA.  One of the capoeira mestres that i trained with a couple of years ago, Mestre Hulk, won his MMA fight but i think he probably resorted to Brazilian ju-jitsu instead which totally kicks ass.

However there's a whole other aspect to capoeira with language, instruments and singing etc..and i find it's not as macho as other martial arts.  I went kickboxing for a few years, tried a couple of different clubs but found they were really up themselves always thinking they had to prove they had the biggest b******s!  I hate that kinda crap.

Anyway I managed to get back to some decent training last night and am pretty happy that my shoulder held out ok.

exactly why I don't train kickboxing...always hot heads that have to be put in their place.

me me me!!! I've been doing it for 6 years but on and off. I love it! I did it for about 3 years straight, then it got a little difficult to keep up in college. I've been going back for the last year or so as much as I can between work and what I can afford but that ends up being once a week at best. So...yeah, I'm pretty out of shape :X ! But It is great for self esteem, strenght building, endurance, and just to have fun. I grew up doing gymnastics and dance so I love the acrobatic aspect to it and the music really gets me pumped too. I also like that its multidimensional- to be a capoeirista you have to know the music, the dances, the martial arts, the language, the instruments, it's a whole cultural experience. I'd really like to go to Brazil and learn portuguese too.

I know it might not hold up in a fight against other martial artists but I'm sure the strenght and teqniques could still help me out if I needed it. I actually cracked my shin bone a few years ago kicking someone Embarassed

aguardente: where do you train? sounds like you're in the UK, it's great that everywhere I travel I always meet people who do it!

Tudo bem gibbit! - yeah i'm in the south east of the UK and train in Putney, Balham and Tooting.  If you're ever in the vicinity you'd be welcome to come and train with us.

Capoeira is sooooo addictive, i totally understand what you mean about having difficulty making training though...it happens to everyone at some point, life gets in the way Lol!!

My group is Association of Capoeira Engenha da Rainha (ACER).  In fact we are having our Batizado on 9th May 2009, check out the details on this link:  http://www.brazilculturalfestival.org/.  Anyone is welcome to come along to any of the events!

I have only been doing it for about a month and I can bend in ways I didn't think men could already.  haha

I really am enjoying it and I wouldn't use it much in a fight, but I have spared with a friend I used to do Karate with already and just pulled one of those basic esquivas and the look on his face was priceless.  He thought I went soft or something and that is how I won that one.  I pretty sure in a real fight I would have recieved a brutal beatdown for that, but it was still fun.

i love capoeira

Don't get me wrong...there are a select few guys out there that can really really use this art to the fullest in a fight, and win easily, but the average practitioner would find it hard to beat someone who also knows an art.  That being said I think any capoeira person could easily defend themselves from an attacker who knows nothing about martial arts....I think it is very safe to say that....

agreed.  However in general I am moving better now than I did when I was training in more traditional arts.  So maybe it might be safe to say that is a good method of training so long as you keep a level head about what is useful outside of a roda(play circle) and what would be just useful in general.

Like I suggested I would not pull the same stuff I did sparing on the street or competition of any sort mainly because I am far far from great at it.  It is just a game to me at this point.  Best case scenario is I got lucky because my partner thought I looked silly for a moment.  It wouldn't work again I think because he would see it coming.

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
