Car Sickness in the Morning
I go to a small high school about 40-60 minutes away from home and am bused there via a mini-van. Since school started this year, I seem to be getting car-sick on the way to school almost, if not, every day. However, on the way back I am fine. Does any one know why this might be and/or have any tips to help prevent or alleviate it?
Do you take vitamins in the morning, or eat a high iron breakfast? I find that if I eat/take a suppliment of iron without lots of other foods and water it makes me nauseous.
Nope, no vitamins or lots of vitamins. I do, however, take thyroid medication (30mg of Armour Thyroid). Usually, I don't have time to eat in the morning before school so I do once I get there. Could energy drinks be affecting the car-sickness?
Taking any sort of medication on an empty stomach could be accounting for feeling sick. If you're eating once you get to school, maybe you could wait until you get there to take your medicine as well? I know schools are strict about taking medication but you could probably set it up with your nurse. If not, unfortunately you'll probably have to roll back that alarm clock another twenty minutes so that you can eat BEFORE you take your medicine BEFORE you leave.
Hope that helps! :-)
Hm...the problem is that I'm actually supposed to take the medicine first thing in the morning and wait a bit before eating. But I suppose that may be it. >_< Darn it.
When you are on your way to school, what are you doing? Are you trying to read, or keeping your eyes closed?
I've heard that car sickness is caused by the disconnect between your body and your head.....meaning, your body feels like you are moving, but your eyes are telling your brain you aren't (which happens if you are looking at one thing (book) or have your eyes closed).
Looking out the window is supposed to help.
Maybe in the afternoon you are wide awake and talking to friends so your brain and your body can both tell that you are moving?
Just a though. I actually got this out of a parenting magazing......
I think you may be on to something with that. I try to close my eyes and not do stuff as when I did, the car sickness usually got worse. I'll try looking out the window tomorrow (actually today now >_<) and see if that helps. Thanks!
Yup, what I always do to "cure" carsickness (or make it not start altogether) is just make sure to face forward and watch the road or look outside. Don't look at anything that's sitting still! Also, if it gets really bad, you might want to try taking Dramamine or something in the morning before you get into the car. Probably not every day, though—that may not be too good. But it makes it (for me at least) so that I can read in the car without getting carsick, great for those days I have to study on the run.
Hope this helps!
My daughter gets car sick as well, and only when traveling in the morning. After cleaning up a few messes, I got some Gravol. I think it goes by a different name in the States, but it's for nausea/dizziness. She's fine as long as she has one about 30 minutes before heading out.
What kind of stuff is Dramamine? Where would I be able to get it? Should I just look for anti-nausea/dizziness medicines for emergencies?
The looking out the window definitely helped, but it was a bit annoying having to stay up and not being able to get a little shut-eye =/ It's definitely better than getting sick though.
Thanks everyone :]
I think Dramamine is made for motion sickness. You can probably find it at any pharmacy or drug store, and I'm pretty sure you don't need a prescription or anything for it. And yeah, I think motion sickness medicine for days where you have a big test and have to study or something would be good, for me at least. :)
Hope you feel better! ^^
I take thyroid meds too, but I take it just before bed at night. You're supposed to take it on an empty stomach. Maybe switch when you take them.
It could be that you don't eat enough in the morning and that could make you feel queezy. You wouldn't have to eat much. Yogurt would be a good choice as it has natural enzymes for your stomach. Ginger also calms the stomach. Ginger tea or candied ginger would be good.
I too think that looking out the window would help.
Try these things and see if it helps. Good luck.

That's the stuff I was thinking of...I remember my father-in-law saying that he gave it to his new dog who got motion sickness while riding in the truck (FIL is a long haul trucker) He said it worked wonderfully! haha
