to carb or not to carb

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone else have this problem? I can lose weight if I severely limit any kind of grain based carb (pasta, bread, all whole wheat of course!)  I eat fruits and vegetables for my carbs, as well as lots of lean protein.  However, whenever I eat the SAME CALORIC AMOUNT but with grain-based carbs included, I can't lose weight.  Is it possible to have a metabolism that jsut doesn't work with carbs?????

Yup. If I eat wheat I generally feel awful and rundown and it affects my skin. I also get bloated...

I try and avoid wheat wherever possible, but sometimes give in to the odd cookie here and there.

I generally eat rice and potatoes and oats for my main carbs.

Thanks, Sweetigem.  I have the same problem with rice, potatoes and oats, though.  ANYTHING that is what used to be called a "starch" just derails my weightloss.

Do you not just think your slightly allergic to wheat and glucose?

It could be that your body doesn't put out the enzyme necessary to break down carbs.  There is an herb complex by nature's sunshine called Food Enzymes and is great with this. I take one whenever I eat a large meal so  I know my body will break everything down properly.  Here is the link to the herbs.

It's possible... I mean there's a whole heap of foodstuffs I'm better off avoiding because they affect my skin, the worst one of all is onion, but wheat is the only one that makes me feel horrible.

I did go to the docs for this, and he reckoned that my brains wired wrongly, and that I get a nervous system response instead of a salival one, and thats why a lot of foods cause me to flush... I have meds which have helped.

I never thought of it as a glucose sensitivity before tho... thanks for that!

alexandragr1987, did you mean gluten as opposed to glucose?  There's lots of glucose in rice and potatoes, but not much gluten, a protein which is commonly found in wheat.

I'm going to have to believe that you are right there because the brain is dependent on glucose as an energy source so if you can't metabolize glucose you are probably truly metabolically challenged if you get my meaning. This is why when you have a hypoglycemic episode you tend to appear drunk and can even slip into a hypoglycemic coma (aka insulin shock).

Thats ok...but come to think of it i think i mixed up glucose and gluten!hahaha...its probably gluten thats your body is reacting to rather than glucose! It just seems weird to me that you could get such a big reaction from a food instantly that it made me think it might be an allergic reaction. Im a beauty therapist and although food does affect our skin very much it happens only if you sustain your body to certain types of "unhealthy" foods for a long period of time. Allergic reactions occur when our body responds to ceratin substances in a severe and un-normal way. Usually these reactions are itching, swelling, excessive erethyma but also in spot outbusts! I think your GP didnt advise you to the full! I think he sould have reffered you to a dermatologist just to be on the safe side...

For me, I only let myself eat significant carbs if it has been a heavy exercise day.  If I feel fatigued and my muscles are tired, I let myself grab a bagel or some toast.  What I have found personally is that since carbs are for energy, if I have a "standard" day (a day off exercise or only very light exercise) and eat a carb heavy meal, I will retain water.  Also, carbs convert to sugars which are very quickly stored as fat if you don't burn the energy that they are trying to provide to your body.

Thanks, Jessrene.  That makes a huge amount of sense.
