Quote  |  Reply

in the past i have used the south beach diet as a jumping off point to changing my lifestyle and losing weight.

i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this....

start off with one month of a diet high in fiber and lean protein with zero carbs and tehn work in complex carbs and whole grains.....

thoughts? advice? thanks!!

I don't see the point.

If you used it as a jumping off point to change your lifestyle why would you need to do it again....  Basically, if it had worked you would not be here.

I don't see the point either.  You need to go ahead and make lifestyle changes that you can live with.  Losing slowly and steadily with a healthy diet and exercise will lead to permanent losses.

No "jumpstart" needed.

I don't understand how a diet could be high fiber AND zero carbs...

You need three macronutrients to live:  Carbs, Fats and Proteins.  If you restrict any ones of these, you are doing NOTHING good for yourself.  Over the long term you can do some pretty serious damage.

Jump starting a healthy eating plan by doing some rediculous diet is silly.  Plus you can't have high fibre with zero carbs, unless you're consuming some weird chemical I don't know about.

Jump start a healthy lifestyle by.....HAVING A HEALTHY LIFSTYLE.

fiber is a carb...

Ah ha ha - I was about to say that international_chick....

Southbeach queen here or so I claim ;D. SB thread LINK if your interested, with a long list of phase1 options.

No-carb, high fiber is a contraditions.
Fiber is an undigestable carbs.  No carbs means no fiber.

SB phase1 jumpstart (2weeks) isnt no carb, but low carb.
Specifically, low in starch and sugar carbs but includes beans (HIGH carbs) daily plus plenty of non starchy veg fiber.

Be careful.  If you do this, you probably want to reintroduce the sugar/starch carbs gradually because the body can create cravings at re-introduction if you then jump into them.  Its a personal choice but recommendably short term one.

BTW even SB doesnt recommend extending phase1 past 2 weeks unless youve a very large amount to lose and even then only shortly longer.

Also, if your going low carb get those beans in there daily if possible.  Low carb otherwise can cause constipation.

As everyone has already mentioned, fiber IS a carb and besides if you want to have ENERGY during the day, you need to eat carbs as this is the building blocks for how your body uses energy, which in turn helps you lose weight.

by zero carbs i mean no pasta, bread, rice, etc....but appreciate the sentiment.

thanks for the advice.
