"Carbohydrate of which sugars"???
When a food label says "Carbohydrate of which sugars" is it better to have a minimal amount of the carb which sugars or is it ok to have say 50%. I am pretty sure 100% (Nurishment shakes) is bad but I don't want to store too much which could potentially cause fat? At the same time I'm pretty sure I need some carb sugar? I have tried the internet but as ever most sites contridict each other . Please help!
You need carbohydrates and sugars. Carbohydrates should be 50 - 60% of your daily intake on average and preferably should be complex & unrefined. Added sugars you can live quite happily on less than 50g a day. Natural sugars from things like fruit, vegetables and dairy products would be in addition to that figure.
Diets that contain a lot of high sugar and refined starch foods tend to make weight-gain easier because sugars and refined starches, although high in calories, are not satisfying. High sugar foods also trigger insulin responses that make it harder for the body to release fat. And the same insulin responses also lead to energy slumps and hunger-pangs.... which make weight-control more difficult.
As a good guide a food with more than 20g sugar per 100g is a 'high sugar food' and one with less than 5g sugar per 100g would be a 'low sugar food'.
You dont technically need carbs or sugars. The less sugars the better in any case. In the absence of dietary sugars (carbs and sugars) your liver will at some point break down protein into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis.
Some complex carb content is ok for most people. A diet of 50-60% carbs is not OK for everyone and many people are more healthy and satisfied with a much much lower carb content.
