Carbohydrates and Fat Loss

Quote  |  Reply

Hi there,

I wanted some advice on my fat loss. I am eating carbs from

oatmeal - unsweetened/unsalted

sweet potatoes

whole wheat pasta

vegetables

berries

I was wondering if i continue eating these with lean meats and nuts, will i be able to burn fat effectively?

I run 40 minutes 3 times a week, do HIIT for 8 minutes on rowing machine 4 times a week.

I do weights at 8 reps 3 x a week and also do many rowing outings. This is all fr my sports training.

I always have porridge for breakfast with egg whites and then after my morning session i eat a carb/protein rich snack. I continue to eat every three hours with snacks of nuts and berries.

I always refuel after workouts.

I also keep my calories a little  lower then 2500 , usually around 1700-1900 to support my training but keep burning.

If  i countinue this and mix up my training each week will i burn fat well?

Your body converts all the food you give it to energy... doesn't really matter where it comes from.   To burn fat you need to consume slightly less energy than you use up.... then your body will burn its fat stores to make up the shortfall.  To be healthy you need to get a good balance of as many different types of food as you can...  carbohydrates, proteins and fats included.

Your food choices seem good but do make sure you're getting enough calories.  The difference between what you burn up and what you take in should be around 700.... once it gets past 1000 you can start to compromise weight-loss and also put yourself at risk of malnourishment.

Your diet sounds ideal for training with low GI carbs and protein at every meal.

I'm no expert but based on the hi-protein and low carb/low GI carb intake, if your calorie output is higher than your input you should be losing fat no problem. You're doing both cardio and weights so I don't see why not. If you want a bit more, try cutting out carbs at night, for your last two meals, and replace them with good fats.

This is all based on the current regiment I'm on with a trainer.

thanks alot guys!

I will be careful about my calories, i think i will start upping them as my training gets more vigorous, but for now i will see how things go!

It's better to start too high with the calories and trim back than it is to start too low, cause problems (look up 'starvation mode') and have to make hasty rectifications.  Lots of would-be dieters make that fundamental mistake... don't join them Smile

Like a fire, your body burns energy brightest when it's given plenty of good quality fuel.  Let the fire die down to embers and you can spend an awful lot of time trying to fan things back into life again.
