How many carbs & fat grams per day??

Quote  |  Reply

How many carbs per day should I have and still be able to lose weight?  Also, how many fat grams would be acceptable.  I just started counting these and would like to stay as low as possible. Are the carbs in oranges and yogurt OK?

I've read in several sources that given your daily calorie intake (which I'm assuming you've already calculated) your carbohydrates should encompass 50% or less of your calories and your fat intake 30% or less.

Hope this helps you out :D

Try to forget about grammes of carbohydrates and fats and instead try to get a good balance of as many different, wholesome, nutritious foods as possible.  Yoghurt and oranges are good choices.   Neither carbohydrates nor fat will especially prevent you from losing weight.... it's the total calories per day that are most important for that.

A healthy, balanced diet will contain 40-65% carbohydrate, 15- 25% protein and 25-30% fats.   Keep your CC food log updated, check the analysis and you'll quickly see if you need to make any adjustments

Personally after years and years of losing, gaining, losing, gaining I have finally found what works for me. I am strickly keeping track of my calories. I am choosing low fat and fat free foods. I don't worry about counting carbs at all. I have been consuming 1200-1300 calories a day and I don't really exercise at all. I have lost 65.5 pounds since September (with having two BAD months for January and February). I am thrilled with my progress. Could it be more? Yes! Should I exercise? Yes. Will I? Maybe...LOL!

Hang in there and find what works best for you and stick with it.

Best of luck!

That's wonderful - great progress.  65 pounds is a significant amount of weight.  I have not been on the yo-yo thing and have never really dieted.  My size 12-14 suited me just fine and I felt good.  However, giving up cigarettes and have a severe case of pneumonia has taken it's toll.

So, for the first time I am dealing with trying to lose weight.  Yesterday I started keeping track of calories and have promised myself no sugar, only a little bread and low fat.

My thinking is that size is what matters and having a good self image is more important than a constant reminder that weight is the primary issue.  I don't know how much I weigh, nor do I want to know.  My size now is 16 in regular clothes and 18 in jeans.  This website has already motivated me in a very positive way.  I do appreciate all the comments from everyone.  A Big Thank you.

For a most balanced diet you should get 40% carbs, 30% proteins and 30% fats.  That's why my dietitian told me anyway.

Since fats are 9kcal per gram (where carbs and protein are only 4 kcal per gram) I tend to err on the side of less than more, but still ensure that I am getting fat in my diet since it is necessary for many functions that your body performs "behind the scenes".

Just my 2 cents worth.

Well, it's almost impossible to have "no sugar" and still eat right.  Maybe you mean no *added* sugar?  Because there are natural sugars in so many things... for example fruit.

Also carbs are in fruits and vegetables, and our brains runs most efficiently on carbs.

Fat is also important, for skin, hair, digestion and a host of other bodily functions.

Why not try to get a good balanced diet as gi-jane suggested?

There is no reason to depive yourself of things like bread in order to lose weight.

I happened upon this today at:

http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritio nist/f/macronutrients.htm

The United States Department of Agriculture suggests that approximately 50% of your calories should come from carbohydrates, about 30% from fats, and approximately 20% from protein sources

Does that mean that if I have 1200 calories per day that 50%, or 600 grams, should be carbs.  I think I still don't understand.

No, grams don't equal calories.  There are 4 calories in a gram of carbs.  That means you could have 150 grams of carbs.  150 grams of carbs= 600 calories.

By the way, 1200 calories is pretty low amount for most people.
