i think carbs are the worst thing in the world!

im sure we dont need the amount we have.

From what I understand calories are calories regardless of where they come from. If you eat too many CALORIES and don't burn enough, you'll gain weight.

carbs aren't bad... you need carbs in your diet, especially for your body to recover after working out

Fwiw, and I don't know if it's right, but the nutrition label on my whey protein container says you should get about 300g of carbs with a 2000 calorie diet.  Probably something worth researching if you're that interested.

Don't listen to fad diets. Carbs are fine. It's calories that determine weight loss. A gram of carbs or protein has 4 calories, and a fat gram has 9 calories. Try to get most of your calories from proteins and carbs.

I am a huge fan of the carb/no carb debate! /crack knuckles

ok! here we go!

what you want is you want to get the most bang for your carb.  there are empty carbs and healthy carbs (that's the way I see them, no good and bad here!) and here are some examples:

Healthy:

whole wheat bread

brown rice

whole wheat/ brown rice pasta

Empty:

hostess cupcakes

potato chip

cotton candy

what is important to remember is that your body HUNGERS for nutrients and energy.  So eating whole wheat bread, which naturally has lots of vitamines and minerals, is going to satisfy your needs better than plain white (i.e. wonder bread) bread, which is made with enriched flour.  They take out about 3xs the nutrients they put back in with their so called enrichment.  not to mention the added fiber of the whole grain assits in satiating you...and moving other things along ::ahem:: if you get my meaning Wink

so you want to get the most bang for your carb!  Other healthy carbs include fruits and veggies, those have a lot of bang for their carb, with vitamins a plenty and relatively few calories!

as far as protein goes, if you go out and eat only hamburger, you're going to shoot your cholesterol through the roof (most likely).  besides, plain hamburger is generally made of NECK MEAT (ick!) which is not very meaty at all.  you want to shoot for LEAN protein, like skinless chicken, lean cuts of beef, and fish is always on the menu.  Shellfish is also a good one!  the most important thing to remember is don't eliminate anything!

if you completely eliminate fat you'll get very ill, the same goes for anything!  so get the most bang for your carb, and be healthy!

I've been trying low-carb this week, and I think I don't like it at all - it's hard to lift heavy while carb-depleted :)

I'm with her -^ it depends on the carb. As long as it hasn't been industrially processed into something that bears no resemblance to the original plant, you're good to go.
