No carbs after 9pm, Good choice or insignificant in weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey guys/gals, Ok so lately I've been trying to figure out ways to eliminate bad foods from my diet, well maybe not eliminate per sey but definitely eat less of certain foods that I get addicted to quickly. So I've been trying not to eat carbs (10 grams or less) after 9pm seeing as I won't need a significant amount of carbs to go to sleep with.  Is this a good choice? I know that carbs alone won't make you fat or gain weight but I am doing this to immediately cut back on problem foods that are often low in nutrients and high in carbs and fat (i.e. cake, cookies, ect.) Will this be good in the long run? Or, not pose any good or bad results at all?

If what you're effectively doing is not eating a final 200 cals of cake, pizza, biscuits or similar late at night then it'll help your weight-loss because you'll be reducing your total calorie intake for the day.  If, however, you replaced those 200 cals with 200 cals of some other food group (even if it's 'healthy food') you wouldn't see any difference.

Have a good-sized main meal in the evening with plenty of vegetables so that it's filling.  If you like having a later snack, plan it into your day's calories and enjoy it.  Good luck

I dont understand. Why 9PM?

The whole idea of calorie counting to lose weight is just measuring calories per day. You could theoretically eat one huge meal of just carbs right before you go to bed - as long as your average cals/day is lower than your maintenance level you will still lose weight. So I think setting a time like 9PM doesnt help because it doesnt change the math. Although if that works for you then by all means do it.

But yeah, I agree that simple carbs are often calorie-dense so you will get more overall nutrition by replacing them with better stuff. And youll be more full.

sorry for the long answer

Just eat enough calories for the day and get sufficient rest at night. Your body will produce the right amount of leptin to eliminate the fats in the food.

Good information on carbs at night.

Calories in are calories in.  But if it makes you not eat that snack while watching tv, or if it makes you sleep better, than go for it.  Only you know what works for you, so if it's healthy and it works for you, than do it.

thanks for all your replies :-) I really appreciate the feedback! I agree with all of you and I don't really understand why I started this carb thing in the first place lol, I just took a nutrition course in college and we even learned that a calorie is a calorie. I guess when I look at a piece of bread I immediately think of people trying to eat a lot of carbs before a sporting event, and since at night I'm pretty sedentary, I think that I don't NEED anymore carbs. But this makes me realize that I should just plan my food out better and it won't matter what time I eat carbs! Since anyhow it doesn't matter what time you eat anything. thanks!
