How to give a cat a pill 1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right fore-finger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with a rubber band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw T-shirt away and get new one from bedroom.

12) Call the fire department to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

13) Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for SPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

Old joke, but still amusing :)

Pilling a cat *IS* really hard :p
I have come up with another method that works MOST of the time for my 3 cats...

I mash up the pill, or open the capsule and dump the contents into a small dish. I mix in enough peanut butter or soft cheese to absorb it. I put it along my forefinger's edge and while holding kitty, place the sticky goop along the top gumline under her lips.

They lick like crazy and it seems to go down.

If it is a liquid, I use an eyte dropper and place it in the back of their throat before squeezing the contents in. Sometimes i have a small mess!
I find that with cats, first you pick up the cat in a towel, and hold it gently, than you get someone ELSE to open the cat's jaws and pop the pill in her throat, keeping the cat firmly held so it can't run off :)

Sitting on the cat, bodily, can work sometimes as well.
Hah! I read this before a while ago and it makes me laugh a whole lot. Our cat is terrible with pills. You can get him to take them, but five minutes later it 'reappears' on the floor somewhere and I have cleaning to do ;)
Hehehehe so funny..... Thanks!
Funny.  Thank You.

A sure way to get a cat to eat a pill is to put it in a piece of Braunschweigert (sp).

:)
Dogs are easier, I bet.

I do the ground and mix it in with something they like to eat.  Then kindly feed it to them like if I was giving them treats. Lol... They are easier to fool.
I have to take Bubba to the vet if he needs medicine.  He's very strong, and while he doesn't have claws, his teeth are sharp.  Thank goodness he has only needed medicine once in his life - he's very healthy for an old man.

He won't eat anything but dry cat food.  If you try to feed him even the tastiest, most cat tempting treats, like chicken liver or shrimp, he sniffs it and makes little gagging sounds.  It's nice because he never begs.
I slather butter on the pill, and that usually works for me. I've also mashed up pills (the butter trick works only so long for any one medication) and put the results in cat food, people food, all kinds of things, to get it into a cat (preferably the one the pill is for).
My 16 pound cat is great with pills- I just open his jaw and drop it down. He swallows- wa-la- it's done!  But there are some things you might want to purchase from either your vet or the pet stores called " Pill Pockets"   They are little squishy treats and they are probiotically treated too- you just place the pill and seal the pocket- or you can put in a little "meatball" of canned food.

I discovered a fantastic pill alternative for my cat when she had thyroid woes- salve!  Same meds but in the form of ointment that I rubbed on the back of her ear.  Much earlier in my life I earned my keep as a Vet. assistant and even washed cats- sometimes 3 to 5 in one day!!  Cats are fur persons.

I had a vet tell me to give the cat a enema, You can find instruction all line , didn't work well. Don't recommend it.

As for the pill. My vet gave me this long plastic thing I put the pill on end stick in mouth and push the little plunger thing. pill gone.
I don't mind giving my cat pills - but an enema!  gypsie - I don't envy you that task! I had to give a cat a bath once, that was horrible!

If instead of a pill you can get some kind of gel, you simply put the gel on the cat's paw.  They are so particular about being clean that they will lick the medication off and voila! medicine taken.

My cat's diabetic and I have to say, giving a cat a shot of insulin twice a day is SO much easier than anything orally.  She actually tells me when its time for her shot cuz she gets fed right after her shot :)

cannot imagine giving a cat an enema...that just makes me shudder...
I have never had any problems giving my cats pills.  Liquid I find is harder, I prefer to give them pills.  However, the relationship I have with my cats is more than pet-owner typeof thing.  It is best friends and they trust me so much so that sometimes I wonder if they are a bit dense.  I just take the cat,  hold him/her in between your legs in such a way that you can control their head.  Then open the mouth, put the pill in the very back of the tongue and force their jaw closed and hold it closed as you hold their face upwards so that they are looking at the ceiling.  Then stroke their neck several times to induce swallowing.  Wha-la, the pill is swallowed, and the cat just thinks he/she got some attention and pets.  It is easy to give a cat a pill when I use this method.  It works for dogs too.
i miss my cat.  she was so mean but so cat like.  I had to give her away becuase my new roomate was allergic.  I hope he had better luck with her-  she would tear into me for EVERYTHING!  I had little puncture holes in my feet!   OUCH!  gotta love them.
